On behalf of the Politburo, Party General Secretary and President To Lam has signed and promulgated regulations on the functions, duties, powers, working procedures, and working relationships of the Central Steering Committee for Foreign Affairs and International Integration (Regulation No. 214-QD/TW, dated August 18, 2026).

Vietnamese ambassadors have highlighted key priorities and a completely new strategic mindset to help the country's foreign affairs adapt effectively to a rapidly changing world and better serve the nation's sustainable development goals.

Party General Secretary and State President To Lam on August 1 called on the diplomatic sector to play a pioneering role, strengthen strategic research and forecasting, provide sound policy advice and take timely action to safeguard national interests and create resources for development.

Party General Secretary and State President To Lam chaired the first meeting of the Central Steering Committee for Foreign Affairs and International Integration in Ha Noi on June 30, stressing that foreign affairs and international integration must serve more directly national development, strategic autonomy and greater national competitiveness. 

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has stressed that foreign affairs and international integration activities must closely follow the country’s development requirements, making a direct contribution to the goal of achieving double-digit economic growth.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong, Minister of National Defence Dong Jun, will visit Viet Nam from March 15–17 to attend the first ministerial-level strategic dialogue on foreign affairs, national defence and public security between the two countries known as the “3+3” dialogue.

The 14th National Congress of the Party has set out major orientations on foreign policy in the new development stage of the country.

The new era demands the implementation of “comprehensive foreign affairs at a new height”: Ensuring national interests at the highest; taking peace, independence, self-reliance and self-strengthening as the foundation; placing the people at the centre of all policies; and considering contributions to the international community as a responsibility.

The Congress added the perspectives of strategic autonomy and self-strengthening, and affirmed foreign affairs and international integration as a “key and regular” task, said Politburo member and Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung.

As the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) convenes at a pivotal moment in the country’s development, the role of foreign affairs has been elevated to a “key and regular” task on par with national defence and security, reflecting the Party and State’s heightened trust and expectations for diplomacy in the new development era.
