Ho Chi Minh City is a major metropolis and the nation’s economic engine, with a large population, rapid urbanisation, and rising travel demand. This reality prompts the city to urgently develop a modern, integrated urban rail system to serve as the backbone of its public transport network.

Ho Chi Minh City’s Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line served 20.5 million passengers in 2025, surpassing the target by 21.6%, according to its operator HURC1.

Ho Chi Minh City will use municipal funding instead of official development assistance to construct its second metro line between Ben Thanh and Tham Luong, with the total investment rising from 52 trillion VND to 57 trillion VND.

The Government has recently issued a plan to carry out the National Assembly’s Resolution No.188/2025/QH15 on piloting several special mechanisms and policies to develop the urban railway networks in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Passengers can now bring folding bikes onto the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line, Ho Chi Minh City’s first urban railway, following a new policy from operator HURC1 that took effect on August 1.
