Ho Chi Minh City to build Ben Thanh-Tham Luong metro line using municipal funding

Ho Chi Minh City will use municipal funding instead of official development assistance to construct its second metro line between Ben Thanh and Tham Luong, with the total investment rising from 52 trillion VND to 57 trillion VND.

The information was revealed on December 18 by Phan Cong Bang, head of the Ho Chi Minh City Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR).

The cost increase is attributed to a 20-metre extension of the line and the addition of an underground section linking it to Ben Thanh Station.

The 11.269-km-long metro line will include 9.255 km of underground track and feature 10 underground stations, one elevated station and a depot.

Site clearance for the project has been completed, and construction is scheduled to begin in January next year.

The Ben Thanh–Tham Luong line is expected to be fully automated, eliminating the need for train drivers.

Once completed, the line will serve as a key axis linking the city’s centre with the northeastern areas.
