The plan has been proposed at a plenary session of the Dong Nai People’s Council.
Specifically, the extended line will run more than 41 kilometres from Suoi Tien Station, passing through the administrative centre of Dong Nai Province before continuing to Long Thanh Airport.
The project will be implemented between 2025 and 2029 under a public-private partnership at a total cost of over 60.2 trillion VND (2.28 billion USD), of which 4.3 trillion VND will be allocated to site clearance and resettlement.
According to the Dong Nai authorities, the province and Ho Chi Minh City are currently linked primarily by road, but major routes such as National Highway 1 and National Highway 51 are severely congested.
Once Long Thanh Airport is put into operation, scheduled for next year, transport links between the two localities are expected to become even more strained.
Therefore a metro line or high-speed railway is urgently needed to ease pressure on existing roads and shorten travel time between Long Thanh Airport and downtown Ho Chi Minh City.
