For many years, efforts to tackle plastic pollution in Viet Nam have focused primarily on collecting and treating plastic waste after it has been generated.

Plastic waste pollution in tourism is placing increasing pressure on many localities. If not addressed promptly, the burden of environmental protection will continue to rise, directly affecting destination quality and the sustainability of the tourism sector.

The potential and measures for advancing the circular economy were the focus at a panel discussion of the Viet Nam’s Economy in 2025 and Prospects in 2026 Forum (VEPF), co-hosted by the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Policies and Strategies and the Government on December 16.

The Viet Nam Tourism Association (VITA) organised a consultation workshop to developing a project on building an effective destination management model for a green, plastic-free, and low-carbon tourism environment. The event gathered destination management representatives and numerous tourism experts from across the country.

Representatives from more than 180 countries and many international organisations are meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, to develop the first legally binding international treaty on limiting plastic pollution. However, negotiations have reached an impasse as the challenge of balancing interests between countries remains unresolved.

Up to 25 teams gathered in Ha Noi on June 25 for the 2025 Plastics Innovation Programme award ceremony, presenting groundbreaking solutions to curb plastic pollution through advanced production and design techniques, reusable products, and circular financial tools.

In 2025, the United Nations selected the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” for World Environment Day (June 5), calling on the global community to take urgent and determined actions to tackle plastic waste.
