The 11-metre tall marble statue is a present from Nam Dinh province for the soldiers and residents on the islands.
The sculpture, which is located on Song Tu Tay Island, is a replica of the prominent commander’s statue in Nam Dinh province.
It is hoped that the statue will boost the morale of people on the archipelago, who are part of the noble mission to protect Vietnam’s sovereignty over its national waters and islands, said Commodore Nguyen Duc Nho at the inauguration ceremony.
General Tran Hung Dao (1232 - 1300) was a great military tactician who commanded the Vietnamese armies in repelling three major Mongol invasions in the 13th century. He is revered by the Vietnamese people as a saint and many temples are dedicated to him across the country.
