Young generation promotes cause of protecting seas and islands

Earlier in May, the 2025 "Youth for the Homeland’s Seas and Islands" delegation, organised by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, visited islands in Truong Sa District (Khanh Hoa Province) and the DK1 platform, bringing heartfelt affection from the mainland to soldiers and residents through a series of meaningful activities.

For the delegation, the voyage was a deeply proud journey held in honour of the 70th anniversary of the Viet Nam People’s Navy (7 May 1955 – 7 May 2025) and the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago (29 April 1975 – 29 April 2025).

During the voyage, members participated in a memorial ceremony for heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives in defence of national sovereignty over the seas and islands.

Exactly 70 years ago, the Coastal Defence Department, the precursor of the Viet Nam People’s Navy, was established. From its humble beginnings with 141 officers, soldiers, and rudimentary equipment, the Navy has steadily grown into a regular, modern, and elite force standing firm across Viet Nam’s maritime frontier.

Throughout its glorious history, the Viet Nam People’s Navy has achieved many proud milestones in protecting and building the nation. Notable achievements include the victories of 2 and 5 August 1964, in which the Navy repelled attacks by the US imperialists; the April 1975 campaign to liberate the Truong Sa archipelago, affirming sovereignty to the world; and the steadfast construction and defence of the DK1 platform system on Viet Nam’s southern continental shelf.

Comrade Nguyen Minh Triet, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Youth Union, President of the Viet Nam National Students’ Association, and Head of the "Youth for the Homeland’s Seas and Islands" delegation, shared that the journey concluded with deep, sacred emotions. Throughout the voyage, the delegation engaged in visits, gift-giving, cultural and sports exchanges, conveying heartfelt sentiments to the officers, soldiers, and residents of Truong Sa District (Khanh Hoa Province) and the DK1 platform.

"Every handshake, every look of empathy, every island or platform life story has become an indelible memory etched in our hearts. Each delegation member felt the unyielding spirit, the determination to overcome hardships, and the profound patriotism that radiates from every outstanding child of the Fatherland living at the frontline of wind and waves," said Nguyen Minh Triet.

He also affirmed that although the voyage has ended, upon returning to daily life, every member carries a renewed and strengthened pride, along with a clear sense of responsibility in building and defending the nation and in protecting and developing our seas and islands.
