This marks the first time in the history of Vietnamese football that the country has qualified for the FIFA U17 World Cup, following an impressive campaign at the 2026 AFC U17 Asian Cup finals. Competing at the world’s premier tournament for the U17 age category is regarded as a major milestone for Vietnamese youth football.
Under FIFA’s seeding regulations, aside from hosts Qatar, who were automatically assigned to position A1 and placed in Pot 1, the remaining teams were seeded based on their performances in the last five editions of the FIFA U17 World Cup.
As first-time participants, U17 Viet Nam were placed in Pot 4 alongside Egypt, Romania, Serbia, Algeria, Uruguay, Tanzania, China, Cuba, Jamaica and two African representatives advancing through the continental play-offs.
FIFA also continued to apply the principle of minimising the number of teams from the same confederation being drawn into the same group during the group stage. As a result, Viet Nam avoided facing other Asian representatives.
Among the opponents in Group G, U17 Mali are considered a physically strong side with a rich tradition in African youth football. The team were seeded in Pot 1 and have consistently demonstrated stability at international youth tournaments. At the ongoing 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, Mali advanced to the knockout stage after finishing second in their group and will face U17 Senegal in the next round.
Meanwhile, U17 Belgium are regarded as a leading representative of European youth football, boasting strong technical foundations, modern tactical thinking and a consistently high standard of youth development over many years.
The remaining team in Group G is U17 New Zealand, the reigning 2026 U17 Oceania champions after defeating U17 New Caledonia 2-0 in the regional final.
Viet Nam Football Federation Vice-President Tran Anh Tu stated that U17 Viet Nam had been placed in a highly competitive group featuring representatives from strong footballing regions in Africa, Europe and Oceania.
“However, qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup itself is already a historic and immensely proud milestone for Vietnamese football. More importantly, this will be a valuable opportunity for our young players to continue developing, gain experience and demonstrate their character on the world’s biggest football stage for the U17 age group,” Tran Anh Tu emphasised.
According to leaders of the Viet Nam Football Federation, participation in the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup carries significance not only for the current generation of players but also serves as motivation for future youth generations to aim for the global stage, thereby contributing to the development of a strong pipeline for the national team in the years ahead.
The 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup Qatar will take place from November 19 to December 13, 2026, featuring 48 teams divided into 12 groups. Teams will compete in a single round-robin format, with the top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the knockout stage.
