The announcement was made by the organising board of the Film Festival, to be held from February 5 to 15 in Berlin, the German capital.

‘Big Father, Small Father and Other Stories’, which was funded by World Cinema Fund under the Berlin International Film Festival, will compete for the Golden Bear (the official award for the best film) with 15 other films from numerous countries around the world, including three from Asia.

The film is about young people living in Ho Chi Minh City in the late 1990s. Vu, a photography student, falls in love with his roommate Thang who is also a small-time drug dealer. However, Vu’s father forces him to marry Huong to separate Vu and Thang, but Huong is secretly in love with Sau.

This is the second time Vietnam has had films selected for official awards at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film 'Ba mua' (Three reasons) by Tony Bui was nominated in 1999. \

Along with Cannes and Venice, the annual festival, founded in 1951, is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world.
