Vietnam People’s Army Day celebrated nationwide

Nhan Dan – A grand ceremony was held yesterday at the Ben Duoc Martyrs’ Memorial in Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City to mark the 68th anniversary of the Vietnamese People's Army Day (December 22, 1944).

The event was attended by former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, Party Central Committee (PCC) member and Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan, PCC member and Deputy Secretary of the city Party Committee Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, revolutionary veterans, Heroes of the People’s Armed Forces, Vietnamese Heroic Mothers and people from the community.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front Committee Duong Quang Ha reviewed the glorious tradition of the Vietnamese army during the two national resistance wars as well as the city Father Front Committee’s great contributions to mobilising the people’s strength to the country’s cause of resistance and construction.

* Earlier, the city authorities laid wreaths and offered incense in commemoration of heroes and martyrs at their memorial of at Ben Duoc temple.

* An exchange was held in Hanoi the same day, featuring arts performances and interviews with war veterans who joined the country’s two resistance wars against the French and the US. The event, co-organised by the Central Committees of the Vietnam War Veterans’ Association (VWVA) and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, aimed to nurture patriotism and national pride amongst the younger generation, encouraging them to make more contributions to their community.

* On the occasion, the Can Tho city authorities held an inaugural ceremony of the Ong Hao Victory historical site in Truong Long commune, Phong Dien district. Covering an area of 2.5 hectares, the complex includes a square, a memorial, a tradition house, a museum space and a park. The construction of the site, started in August 2009 with a total investment of over VND 31.5 billion (US$1.5 million), aims to praise the glorious feats of arms of the Vietnamese people and army, as well as educate the youth about the historic, traditional values of the country.

* A delegation of Thua Thien Hue province’s leaders led by PCC member and Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Nguyen Ngoc Thien offered flowers and incense at the Hue city martyrs cemetery to commemorate fallen soldiers who laid down their lives for the national liberation.
