Nhan Dan – The National Coaching Council yesterday agreed to terminate the two-year contract with the coach of the national football team, Falko Goetz, before the original expiration date.

The German trainer was blamed for the Vietnamese men’s U-23 football squad’s poor performance at the 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Indonesia last month. The team had targeted to win the gold medal but failed to claim even the third spot at the tournament.

Both the Vietnam Football Federation and the National Coaching Council agreed that the German coach had not fulfilled his duties and was no longer suitable for the post.

'Goetz had no clear strategies, was unable to adjust to new conditions and failed to leave behind any outstanding milestones during his time as the coach of the Vietnamese national football team,' said the Council’s Chairman Nguyen Sy Hien.

Falko Goetz, 49, was appointed the coach of the national team last June after the departure of Portuguese Henrique Calisto.

The final decision will be officially announced on January 4 when Goetz returns to Vietnam from his Christmas and New Year vacation.

At the press conference, the Council also approved the VFF's proposal to appoint a local coach as a replacement.
