Thao Nguyen (Elo 2334) scored 4.5 points after six games, while Mai Hung (Elo 2226) attained five points after seven games, contributing to Vietnam’s 11-point total after seven matches, two points behind the champions, China.
Despite Vietnam’s possessing the fourth highest average Elo rating (2295), behind China (2418), Kazakhstan (2404) and India (2390), International Master (IM) Thao Nguyen and her teammates recorded significant victories over Uzbekistan (3-1), India (2.5-1.5), and Kazakhstan (2.5-1.5) to settle for second place overall.

It was the best result that the Vietnamese women have achieved in this arena since 2009, when Thao Nguyen, Mai Hung, and Nguyen Thi Thanh An excelled to bring home the overall title for the country.
In addition to the silver medal, the Vietnamese women’s team also managed to attain a second-place finish in the rapid chess category, scoring 12 points, just one point off the winners, India, and three points clear of third-place China.

In contrast to the glory of their female counterparts, the Vietnamese men only managed 10th position out of the 14 participating teams in the Open standard section with six points, seven points fewer than the gold medalists, Iran. However, they found some consolation by winning the blitz bronze medal.
The poor results of the Vietnamese men’s team could be attributed to the lack of top player Le Quang Liem, who competed in the ninth Danzhou Super Grandmaster Tournament in China’s Hainan province and finished as the runner-up overall, behind China’s Yu Yangyi.
