Benzema strikes again as Real Madrid beat 10-man Chelsea 2-0

A tap-in by Karim Benzema and a powerful strike by substitute Marco Asensio earned European champions Real Madrid a 2-0 win over 10-man Chelsea in their Champions League quarter-final, first leg in the Spanish capital on Wednesday.

* AC Milan took a big step towards their first Champions League semi-final appearance for 16 years as Ismael Bennacer's goal secured a 1-0 home win over Napoli in the quarter-final first leg on Wednesday (Apr 12).

* Rival bidders for Manchester United have been invited to submit a third offer by the end of April, according to reports. Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe both submitted a second bid for the Premier League club last month.

* Finnish businessman Thomas Zilliacus has dropped out of the bidding for Manchester United, saying delays in the sale process will make it difficult for a new owner to build a winning team.

* Italy has formally submitted a bid to host the 2032 European Championship to European soccer's governing body UEFA, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said on Wednesday. The FIGC added that the tournament will be staged across Milan, Turin, Verona, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, Bari and Cagliari if the bid is accepted.

* Alexander Zverev continued to rebuild his confidence on clay with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut in the Monte Carlo Masters second round on Wednesday (Apr 12) and will next face in-form Daniil Medvedev.

* Casper Ruud, last year's French Open runner-up, continued his preparations for the claycourt Grand Slam by battling past Botic van de Zandschulp 7-5 7-6(1) in the Monte Carlo Masters second round on Wednesday, avenging a three-set defeat by the Dutchman in Miami last month.

* Britain won its first-ever team gold at the European Gymnastics Championships by holding off Italy in Turkey on Wednesday. The team of Ondine Achampong, Jessica Gadirova, Becky Downie, Alice Kinsella and Georgia-Mae Fenton posted a combined score of 164.428 points over the four apparatus.

* Two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza and coach Conchita Martinez have parted ways after three years together, Martinez confirmed on Wednesday. The announcement comes just over a week since the 29-year-old Muguruza said she was taking an extended break.

* Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion have been charged over a mass confrontation on the touchline during Saturday's Premier League match, the Football Association said on Wednesday. Spurs caretaker manager Christian Stellini and Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi were sent off in the 58th minute following a brawl involving both benches.

* Italy's football association (FIGC) has finished an investigation into Juventus over alleged irregularities in their payments to players, the Serie A club said on Wednesday (Apr 12). Juventus, who have already been hit with a 15-point Serie A deduction this season in a separate case over players' transfers, could face further sporting penalties if found guilty.

* Triple Olympic champion Adam Peaty was the big absentee as Britain announced a 29-strong team on Wednesday for the world aquatics championships in Fukuoka, Japan in July. The 28-year-old said on social media last month, when he announced he was skipping the British championships, that he wanted to focus on his mental health ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

* Ducati test rider Michele Pirro will replace the injured Enea Bastianini at this weekend's Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin, Texas, the factory team said. Italian Bastianini suffered a right shoulder blade fracture in the MotoGP season-opener in Portugal last month and also missed the second round in Argentina.
