The event marked the establishment of a direct connection between Nanning and Can Tho, opening an additional freight transport corridor between Southwest China and the Mekong Delta.
According to the plan, the Nanning-Can Tho route will operate at a frequency of two trips per month, with a transit time of about seven days. The route uses river-sea container vessels with a total deadweight tonnage of approximately 4,900 DWT and a carrying capacity of 500 TEUs; of which refrigerated containers are expected to account for 25 percent and dry containers 75 percent.
Can Tho Port and Beibu Gulf Port Group are the two co-organisers and are coordinating the development of the route with transport and logistics enterprises, cargo owners and partners in the supply chain.
The Pinglu Canal is a project connecting the Xijiang waterway system with the Beibu Gulf, creating an additional sea route for Guangxi and Southwest China. On September 16, 2026, when the canal officially commenced operations, the Nanning-Can Tho river-sea foreign trade shipping route also made its first voyage.
In Viet Nam, Can Tho Port is responsible for receiving vessels, organising cargo handling and connecting goods with a network of enterprises, customers and production centres in the Mekong Delta. The port currently operates the Cai Cui Port terminal and Hoang Dieu Port terminal, while also providing cargo handling, warehousing and logistics services.
In 2025, the total volume of goods handled through Can Tho Port reached more than 3.14 million tonnes. The port is gradually expanding its container operations and logistics connections to enhance its capacity to serve cargo from the Mekong Delta.
The reception of the first vessel from Nanning Port expands Can Tho Port’s connectivity, from domestic routes and domestic transshipment to more direct international transport corridors.
