A notice by Chinese customs stated the eligible products include bird’s nests and products from bird’s nests, which are formed from the saliva of swiftlets and have been purified for human consumption.

The production and processing of the bird’s nests must meet Chinese and Vietnamese food safety and quarantine requirements.

The production facilities must be registered with Vietnamese authorities and declared to the Chinese side; only the facilities authorised by China can export bird’s nests.

Concerning quarantine requirements, the bird’s nest production areas must not have recorded any bird flu outbreak within 12 months and each shipment must come with certificates on the place of production and animal health.

In recent years, the Chinese demand for bird’s nests has been growing strongly, exceeding 6 billion USD in 2021.
