At the event, the participants also listened to the introduction of the book entitled “Resolutely, persistently fighting corruption and negative phenomena to contribute to building a more transparent and stronger Party and State” by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong.
The conference was attended by Truong Thi Mai, Politburo member, Permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat and Chairwoman of the Party Central Committee’s Organisation Commission; and Nguyen Trong Nghia, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and head of its Commission for Information and Education; along with 3,500 delegates and the elderly from 63 provinces and cities across the country.
Within the conference, Chairwoman of the Party Central Committee’s Organisation Commission Truong Thi Mai gave information and general orientation on current issues regarding the elderly in Vietnam.
She affirmed that our Party and State always pay attention to the role of the elderly in society and having national strategies and action programmes for the elderly with specific goals for each period.
Secretary of the Party Central Committee and head of its Commission for Information and Education Nguyen Trong Nghia thoroughly explained the main contents of the Resolution of 13th Party Central Committee’s sixth plenum as well as information on the socio-economic situations in the country and the world.
According to statistics, by April 2021, Vietnam's population will reach 98.2 million people, including 12.5 million elderly people aged 60 years and older (12.8%); 8.1 million people aged 65 and over (8.3%); and nearly 2 million people aged 80 years and over (2%). It is forecast that Vietnam will have 17.2 million elderly people by 2029, accounting for 16.5% of the population, rising to 22.2 million elderly people by 2039 (20.2%), 28.6 million people by 2049 (24.8%), and 31.6 million people by 2069 (27.11%). Vietnam will officially enter the "old population" phase from 2036, with about 15.46 million elderly aged 65 and over (accounting for 14.17% of the population).
