Da Nang hosts ASEAN-OSHNET conference on occupational safety and health

The third ASEAN Occupational Safety and Health Network (ASEAN-OSHNET) Conference opened in the central city of Da Nang on April 28, gathering nearly 200 delegates from ten ASEAN countries, representatives from the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and winners for the first ASEAN-OSHNET Awards.

The event is part of the annual ongoing 17th ASEAN-OSHNET Co-ordinating Board Meeting in Da Nang from April 26-28, aimed at building up an action plan in 2016-20 in the context of the establishment of the ASEAN Community.

The conference offers an opportunity for ASEAN countries and partners to exchange experiences in implementing occupational safety and health programmes, as well as sharing difficulties and challenges with businesses in building a safe and friendly working environment for employees.

Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Doan Mau Diep said that the ASEAN Community was officially established on December 31, 2015 with three pillars - political-security, economy, and socio-culture - and the ASEAN Socio-cultural Community Blueprint for 2016-2025 has set a target to build an inclusive, sustainable, self-reliant and dynamic community beneficial to local people.

Diep also informed that at the 17th ASEAN-OSHNET Co-ordinating Board Meeting, the board adopted an action plan for the 2016-2020 period, focusing on improving occupational safety and health standards and implementing such standards in ASEAN, maintaining a culture of prevention, including the issues of occupational safety and health, and enhancing the image of occupational safety and health in ASEAN, with an aim to increase the overall quality of human resources and build a safe and friendly working environment for employees.

At the event, ASEAN countries and enterprises shared their experiences and strategies on occupational safety and health.
