De Gea leaves Manchester United after contract expires

David De Gea has left Manchester United following the end of his contract, with the Spanish goalkeeper penning a farewell message to the Premier League club's fans on Saturday after 12 seasons with the Old Trafford side.

De Gea's contract expired on June 30 but at the time the club said they were still in discussions with the 32-year-old shot-stopper over an extension. The Spaniard, who joined United in 2011 when Alex Ferguson was manager, was the current squad's longest-serving player having made nearly 550 appearances.

* England won the under-21 European Championship for the first time since 1984 as Curtis Jones' goal beat Spain 1-0 in Saturday's (Jul 8) final. In a dramatic finale in Batumi, Spain captain Abel Ruiz had a 99th-minute penalty saved by Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford to preserve England's record of not conceding a goal all tournament.

* World Championship silver medallist Shericka Jackson blitzed an eye-popping world leading 10.65 seconds (wind +1.0 metre per second) on Friday, to become the joint fifth fastest woman all time.

* Italian former runner-up Matteo Berrettini confirmed he is back in business after an injury-plagued year with a 6-3 7-6(4) 7-6(5) defeat of German 19th seed Alexander Zverev at Wimbledon on Saturday.

* Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas is proving as durable as the Parthenon at this year's Wimbledon after reaching the second week still very much standing after a 6-4 7-6(5) 6-4 victory over Serbia's Laslo Djere on Saturday (Jul 8).

* Last year's runner-up Ons Jabeur came from a set down to keep alive her Wimbledon dream with a 3-6 6-4 6-3 victory over former Grand Slam champion Bianca Andreescu on Saturday.

* Beatriz Haddad Maia moved into the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career with an emphatic 6-2 6-2 victory over Sorana Cirstea on Saturday, a minute before play was suspended due to rain.

* Petra Kvitova reached the fourth round at Wimbledon for only the second time since triumphing at the All England Club nine years ago with a 6-3 7-5 win over Serbian qualifier Natalija Stevanovic in a rain-disrupted encounter on Saturday.

* Ferrari's Charles Leclerc lapped fastest in final practice for the British Grand Prix at a soggy Silverstone on Saturday with Alex Albon again making waves in his surprisingly quick Williams. Leclerc, who missed Friday's second practice with an electrical issue, set a best time of one minute 27.419 seconds on soft tyres before the rain started.

* Sha'Carri Richardson earned sweet redemption and a spot at the world championships as she won the 100 metres in 10.82 seconds on Friday (Jul 7) at the US championships, while Cravont Charleston won in an upset on the men's side in 9.95.

* Former Chelsea captain John Terry announced his return to the academy of the Premier League club just less than a month after his stint with Leicester City, where he was the assistant manager. The 42-year-old former England skipper returned to Chelsea in a coaching consultancy role in 2022 before joining Dean Smith's coaching staff at Leicester in April this year.

* The city of Harbin in China will host the ninth edition of the Asian Winter Games in 2025, the Olympic Council of Asia announced on Saturday. The northern city, having been unanimously approved by the General Assembly, will host the games for the second time, following its previous hosting in 1996.

* United States forward Megan Rapinoe will retire after this season, the 38-year-old said on Saturday (Jul 8), days before she leaves for the Women's soccer World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

* The Republic of Korea international Lee Kang-in has joined Paris Saint-Germain from Real Mallorca on a five-year contract, the two clubs said on Saturday (Jul 8). The 22-year-old midfielder, who spent two years with the LaLiga side, made 73 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing 10 assists.
