Following Hanoi's Liberation Day on October 10, 1954, the Hanoi Party Committee issued a resolution on "Publishing daily newspaper in the capital city." On October 24, 1957, Thu Do (Capital) Newspaper officially launched its first number.
In 1959, with the desire to strengthen a newspaper of the Party, the Government and the people of the capital, the Hanoi Party Committee merged the Capital Newspaper with the Hanoi Daily Newspaper to form a new one, with President Ho Chi Minh giving the name of Hanoi Capital for the new newspaper.
During the Tet Offensive in 1968, Thoi Moi (New Times) - a newspaper of progressive intellectuals at that time - merged with the Hanoi Capital and President Ho Chi Minh once again named the new paper as Hanoi Moi, becoming the official name of the newspaper to this day.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Ngo Thi Thanh Hang affirmed that Hanoi Moi is a local Party newspaper but has the strength of a national newspaper, with great contributions to the cause of building and developing the capital, as well as the country as a whole. The newspaper is honoured to be the first local Party newspaper across the country to be awarded with the title Hero of Labour by the Party and State, and to be named twice by Uncle Ho.
Praising the achievements recorded by Hanoi Moi during the course of the past 60 years, Deputy Secretary Hang said that the Party and the people of the capital city, together with the whole Party, the whole army and the entire population throughout the nation, are striving to realise the Resolution of the 12th National Party Congress. To meet the requirements for development in the new situation, while ensuring social and political security, efforts by the capital's press agencies, including the Hanoi Moi, are important in order to create a social consensus and promote the strength of the great national unity bloc.

At the anniversary, Nguyen Hoang Long, Editor-in-Chief of Hanoi Moi Newspaper, affirmed that in the past 60 years, many generations of the newspaper’s staff have brought all of their talents and pioneering spirit to focus on propaganda and the promotion of the spirit of overcoming difficulties and challenges, striving to build a new life for the people of the capital city.
The newspaper has made continuous efforts to implement its missions and assigned tasks, increasingly confirming its position as an important information channel in promoting the leadership, direction and political tasks of the Party, the State and the city. The newspaper also takes the lead on the battlefield against negative phenomena and misconceptions to protect the Party and the socialist regime, while creating a consensus in society and promoting the successful completion of the political tasks of the city and at each agency and unit.
Several significant social-charity activities have been held by the Hanoi Moi Newspaper, including the Hanoi Moi Newspaper Run for Peace (44 seasons), the Hanoi Moi Newspaper Table Tennis Championships (five seasons) and many other activities to present gifts worth billions of Vietnamese dong to people affected by natural disasters, in addition to providing scholarships to disadvantaged students.
Regarding the development directions in the near future, the newspaper will continue to be innovative in its content, forms of presentation and information transmission in order to improve the quality and competitiveness of information in three groups of its publications, including the daily printed issues, electronic journals and specialised publications.
Hanoi Moi Newspaper also continues to promote charitable activities to participate in social development, while organising more interactive activities in connecting with readers through writing and photo contests and thematic talk-shows and workshops.
