PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc attends ACMECS 8 and CLMV 9

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended the eighth Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS 8) and the ninth Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Summit (CLMV 9) in Thailand on June 16.

The PM hailed the building of the ACMECS Master Plan and affirmed that Vietnam will coordinate with the other member countries to build a plan of action in order to implement cooperative projects as soon as possible. He also stressed that narrowing the development gap within ASEAN is significant to the socio-economic development in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, as well as to the stability and prosperity of ASEAN as a whole, when addressing the CLMV 9.

Fifth session of 14th NA wraps up

The fifth session of the 14th National Assembly (NA) successfully finalised its entire working agenda and officially wrapped up on June 15 after 21 days of sitting.

The legislature continued to focus on law building, considering and approving seven law projects alongside draft resolutions, while commenting on nine other laws. Notably, the lawmakers decided to delay the adoption of the draft Law on Special Administrative-Economic Units to have more time for research and completion, aiming to ensure its quality and feasibility.

Micronesian Speaker of the Congress visits Vietnam

Speaker of the Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia, Wesley W. Simina, and his entourage left Hanoi on June 15, concluding his official visit to Vietnam from June 5-15, at the invitation of the Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

Both sides highly valued the importance of the Vietnam-Micronesia relations and agreed on key cooperation fields, including agriculture, aquaculture and tourism. Regarding their parliamentary ties, they also agreed to increase the exchange of delegations and people-to-people exchanges, and set up mechanisms for cooperation and negotiations, towards signing agreements on investment promotion and protection, double-tax avoidance and technical cooperation.

Hanoi leads in six-month FDI attraction for first time

Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung grants investment decisions for investors

Hanoi attracted more than US$5.9 billion in FDI in the first half of 2018, making it the country’s largest six-month FDI attractor for the first time in three decades, said Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, Nguyen Duc Chung, at the annual conference “Hanoi 2018 – Investment and Development Cooperation” on June 17.

During the conference, the Hanoi People’s Committee presented investment decisions and licenses for 71 projects with a total investment of VND397.33 trillion (over US$17 billion, including 11 FDI projects, worth more than US$5.428 billion.

Indonesia imposes anti-dumping duties up to 28.49% on Vietnam's steel sheets

Indonesia has announced a levy of anti-dumping duties from 12.01 - 28.49% on colour-coated steel sheets imported from Vietnam for a period of five years.

The decision was made by the Indonesian Anti-Dumping Committee (KADI) after it investigated and found that colour-coated steel sheets imported from Vietnam were dumped into Indonesia between 12.01 - 28.49%, causing considerable losses to the domestic industry.

World Bank upgrades Vietnam’s 2018 growth forecast to 6.8%

The World Bank has revised its 2018 growth forecast for Vietnam from 6.5% to 6.8%, citing an improved medium-term outlook.

On June 15, the institution said that Vietnam's economic growth momentum remains robust and is accompanied by broad macroeconomic stability. The World Bank forecasts that the Vietnamese economy will grow by 6.8% this year before moderating to 6.6% in 2019 and 6.5% in 2020, due to an expected slowdown in global demand.

World Press Photo Exhibition 2018 opens in Hanoi

The World Press Photo Exhibition mark its first arrival back in Hanoi after 15 years when it opened on June 16 evening, showcasing 130 of the most memorable press photographs from around the globe.

Taking place over three weeks, at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, No. 42 Yet Kieu Street, Hanoi, the event is organised by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Vietnam, in collaboration with the Vietnam Journalists’ Association (VJA), aiming to honour the winners from 125 countries who sent over 73,000 photos to the 61st World Press Photo Contest last April.

The World Cup 2018 officially commenced on Thursday night (June 14) following a vibrant colourful opening ceremony at the 80,000-seat Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow – the national stadium of Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered his opening remarks. The ceremony also saw the presence of FIFA Legend and 2010 FIFA World Cup winner Iker Casillas, former Brazilian football star Ronaldo and Zabivaka, among others.
