Party chief calls for extra efforts to combat COVID-19

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong requested the entire political system to pay the highest attention to COVID-19 prevention and control in the spirit of “fighting the pandemic like fighting the enemy” while chairing a Politburo meeting on this work in Hanoi on June 11.

He lauded the joint efforts made by agencies, localities, forces and organisations, the support and solidarity of the Vietnamese people, as well as the assistance of foreign friends.

Noting that the pandemic is developing more complicatedly and unpredictably, the Party chief stressed the importance of maintaining high vigilance to prevent the pandemic from spreading and breaking out, and actively readying measures and scenarios to promptly deal with any possible circumstances.

Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on June 7 led a delegation to attend the Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Chongqing City on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations (1991-2021). This is the first in-person meeting at the foreign ministerial level held by ASEAN since the COVID-19 outbreak.

During the meeting, the Foreign Ministers of ASEAN and China shared many important development orientations for the bilateral relationship, in which they agreed to give high priority to promoting cooperation in controlling COVID-19 and promoting post-pandemic recovery.

ASEAN and China agreed to closely coordinate in implementing activities to mark 30 years of bilateral partnership between the two sides, as well as to prepare the best conditions for the ASEAN-China commemorative summit later this year.

Speaking at the event, Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that the achievements obtained over the past 30 years have proved the sustainable, reliable and mutually beneficial partnership between ASEAN and China. He stressed that Vietnam will actively work with ASEAN member countries and China to strengthen political dialogue; improve mutual understanding, trust and respect; and promote comprehensive cooperation, making the bilateral relationship a model of stable and sustainable partnership between neighbouring countries.

List of 499 winners in 15th NA election announced

The National Election Council (NEC) held a press conference in Hanoi on June 10 to announce its Resolution on the outcomes of the elections of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2025 tenure along with the list of 499 candidates elected to the 15th legislature.

Speaking at the event, Politburo member, Standing Vice Chairman of the NA and Standing Vice Chairman of the NEC Tran Thanh Man emphasised that the success of the elections demonstrates the collective power of the people and the entire political system under the Party's leadership and State management, and vividly reflects the tradition of patriotism, the power of the great national unity, and the people's solid trust in the regime, the Party and State.

According to Chief of the NEC Office Bui Van Cuong, the rate of full-time NA deputies this term has reached a record high of 38.6 percent of the total number of lawmakers. The rates of young, ethnic and re-elected deputies also met or surpassed the targets. In particular, the rate of female deputies has reached an all-time high of over 30 percent since the sixth NA tenure.

Close to 1 tonne of Vietnamese lychees arrive in France

A ‘thieu’ lychee batch weighing close to a tonne from the northern province of Hai Duong arrived at the Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport in France on June 12, announced the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Labelled with Vietnam’s itrace247 origin tracing stamp, the batch was shipped thanks to the trade promotion efforts by the Vietnam Trade Office in France and the ministry’s Trade Promotion Agency (Viettrade) following a series of business matching sessions involving Hai Duong lychees.

The batch, transported to France by the Red Dragon Service Trading Manufacture Co., Ltd, will be available at the Asia supermarket chain in Paris.

Vietnamese firms win bids for rice exports

Vietnamese firms continue to win bids for rice exports to the EU and the Republic of Korea (ROK) since the beginning of the year.

Pham Thai Binh, General Director of Trung An Company, said it won a bid to ship two batches of rice weighing over 22,000 tonnes to the ROK, which are scheduled for delivery in September and October.

Earlier, on April 19, the company signed a contract to export 11,263 tonnes to the ROK at a price of US$584 per tonne. Delivery is due this month.

The ROK has a quota of importing over 50,000 tonnes of rice from Vietnam this year. Trung An alone has won bids for more than 33,000 tonnes.

Music video encourages people and frontline forces in fight against COVID-19

A community music video entitled “Vietnam’s Power” was introduced to the public at the programme “Viec tu te” (Kindness), which was broadcast on Vietnam Television on June 12, aiming to encourage people and frontline forces during the fourth COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

The video features the participation of 50 famous people including singers, actors, actresses, beauty queens and master of ceremonies. Through the MV, audiences will see images of doctors, medical staff, military officers and soldiers who have voluntarily come to the epicentre to help people as well as donations from individuals and organisations around the country.

The song “Vietnam’s Power”, composed by musician Xuan Binh, was inspired from the kind images of Vietnamese people amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to convey the message of “By uniting together, we will overcome all difficulties”.

Vaccine fund receives over US$ 210 million

The National COVID-19 Vaccine Fund has received more than VND 4.8 trillion (over US$210 million), including foreign currency conversion, from 283,169 contributing organisations, units and individuals as of 5pm on June 12

According to Minister of Finance Ho Duc Phoc, the money in the fund is a crystallisation of the people's love, responsibility, sharing and deep patriotism.

At the request of the Ministry of Health and as approved by the Prime Minister, the fund will be released for the Ministry of Health to buy vaccines to serve the people.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Health has said Vietnam needs 150 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine, costing VND25.2 trillion (US$ 1.1 billion), to inoculate the roughly 75 million people needed to reach herd immunity.

Vietnam to advance in FIFA world rankings

After two wins against Indonesia and Malaysia in the second round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers, the Vietnamese team are expected to collect 13.4 points in the FIFA World Rankings, thereby climbing two places to occupy the 90th position in the world with 1,271 points.

Specifically, Vietnam are projected to collect 6.18 points from their 4-0 victory over Indonesia and a further 7.28 points from beating Malaysia 2-1 on June 12.

If coach Park Hang-seo’s side gain a positive result against the UAE in the last Group G match of the Asian qualifiers, the Golden Stars will most likely be promoted further up the world rankings.

Currently, Vietnam have collected 17 points after seven matches, and are firmly at the top of the table with a ticket to play in the 3rd qualifying round almost certainly in their hands.

Vietnam secures 14 Tokyo Olympic berths so far

On June 12, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) confirmed that three Vietnamese athletes have won berths to the Tokyo Olympic Games, raising the nation’s total across all sports to 14 berths so far.

Weightlifters Thach Kim Tuan, Vuong Thi Huyen, and Hoang Thi Duyen are those who have been named by the IWF in its announcement.

To date, Vietnam has secured Olympic berths in swimming, boxing, gymnastics, badminton, archery, rowing, taekwondo, and weightlifting.
