Juventus slump to 4-1 defeat at Empoli after points deduction

Juventus were handed a crushing 4-1 defeat at lowly Empoli in Serie A on Monday (May 22) after they were docked 10 points in a new ruling over their transfer dealings, which makes it unlikely they will qualify for the Champions League.

Juve, who learned about the new verdict shortly before kick-off, dropped from second to seventh following the points deduction.They are on 59 points, one behind AS Roma who occupy the final European qualifying place in sixth and five adrift of fourth-placed AC Milan with two games left.

* Tiger Woods will not compete in next month's US Open while he recovers from recent surgery, the major tournament's organisers said on Monday. The 15-times major winner withdrew from the Masters midway through the tournament due to injury and had fusion surgery on a bone in his ankle last month to address post-traumatic arthritis from a previous talus bone fracture.

* AS Roma were held to a surprise 2-2 home draw by Salernitana on Monday that dented their hopes of qualifying for European football next season via their Serie A position. The draw left Jose Mourinho's Roma side one point behind fifth-placed Atalanta and four off AC Milan, who are fourth, in the race for European places with two games remaining. Roma could qualify for next season's Champions League by winning the Europa League final against Sevilla on May 31.

* Polish referee Szymon Marciniak, who officiated the World Cup final in December, will take charge of next month's Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan, UEFA said on Monday. Marciniak, 42, became the first Polish referee to officiate a World Cup final when he took charge of Argentina's penalty shootout victory over France in Doha and was praised for his handling of the contest.

* Spanish soccer has a racism problem, football federation chief Luis Rubiales said on Monday, after Real Madrid lodged a complaint following alleged insults hurled at their Brazilian star Vinicius Jr. A match at the Mestalla stadium in Valencia was stopped for 10 minutes after the 22-year-old forward, Real Madrid's second top scorer this season (23) behind Karim Benzema (29), pointed out fans who were allegedly hurling racist comments at him.

* Britain's sprint king Mark Cavendish announced on Monday that he will end his 17-year career as a professional cyclist at the conclusion of the season. During his illustrious career Cavendish racked up 161 victories, including 34 at the Tour de France to equal the record of Belgian great Eddy Merckx.

* Alpine's Pierre Gasly moved away from the risk of a Formula One race ban on Monday after dropping two of the 10 penalty points accrued for a series of minor offences over the past year.Twelve points in a 12-month period triggers an automatic suspension.

* The French Open is offering players at this year's tournament free access to a tool that will filter hateful messages on their social media platforms in a bid to prevent cyberbullying and harassment, organisers said on Monday. The French Tennis Federation (FFT) said that artificial intelligence will be used to moderate comments players receive on posts in real time - with responses analysed in less than 200 milliseconds - and care will be taken about what is censored.
