Kon Tum hit by strongest earthquake ever

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Kon Plong District in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum at 11:35 am on July 28, according to the Institute of Geophysics (IGP).

It was a medium earthquake but the strongest ever to hit Kon Tum Province. It was detected among dozens of tremors that occurred in the province on July 28, the IGP reported.

The IGP determined that the earthquake in Kon Tum was an induced earthquake.

Prior to the magnitude 5.0 earthquake on July 28, the strongest earthquake ever to strike Kon Tum was a magnitude 4.7 one on August 23, 2022.

Dr Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the IGP, said since the start of 2024, the institute has recorded 155 earthquakes across the country, of which 142 occurred in Kon Tum Province.
