On the afternoon of March 23, in the Central Highlands direction, the 320th Division advanced along Route 7 to Cung Son District headquarters, where thousands of enemy troops with dozens of tanks and armoured vehicles had clustered, seeking an escape route to Tuy Hoa.
On the night of March 23, the 1st and 2nd Regiments of the 324th Division surrounded, destroyed and captured thousands of troops of the 1st Division of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) at Phu Thu.
At 5 am on March 23, Gia Nghia Town and Khiem Duc District were completely liberated. The Liberation Army took control of Route 14 connecting Buon Ma Thuot with Binh Phuoc, opening the Ho Chi Minh Trail section from the Southern Central Highlands to the Southeast region.
At 8 am on March 23, forces from the 101st Regiment of the 325th Division attacked and quickly took control of Luong Dien Base, timely opening a route for the 324th Division to advance to the plains. Our artillery fired at Phu Bai Airport, Tay Loc, and the ARVN I Corps headquarters at Mang Ca.
The 2nd Corps was deployed to capture Thuan An sea gate, blocking the enemy's only remaining escape route to the sea, forming a large encirclement from south of Hue to the Hai Van Pass.
The 2nd Battalion of the 101st Regiment, 325th Division, attacked La Son and Ke Bang before moving down to block Cau Truoi gate (north of Luong Dien Base). The 7th Battalion of the 101st Regiment attacked along the Cau Hai area, captured Xuan Lo, blocked the enemy's route to the sea, and then advanced to capture Ban Mon.
At 4:30 pm the same day, the 101st Regiment liberated Luong Dien, cleared enemy forces north of Cau Truoi and followed Route 1 to strike directly at Phu Bai.
On March 23, in the 324th Division's direction, the 4th Tank Company promptly moved from A Luoi to coordinate with infantry against the enemy. By afternoon, the company coordinated with the 1st Battalion to launch a surprise attack capturing Base 303, Nui Bong, and Nui Nghe, then advanced to Route 1 with the 101st Regiment for an attack towards Phu Bai. The 78th Artillery Regiment moved to La Son and Cau Truoi to support the infantry fighting ahead.
On the night of March 23, after reaching Phu Loc plains, the 1st and 2nd Regiments of the 324th Division urgently advanced towards Thuan An sea gate, destroying the enemy's intention to evacuate a portion of their forces from Thua Thien-Hue through this sea gate.
In the north of Hue, the 3rd, 14th and 812th Battalions of Quang Tri’s local forces completed their formation. The 18th Regiment (325th Division) captured Mui Ne, then continued attacking and destroyed the Phu Loc military subregion and district headquarters.
On March 22 and 23, in the direction north of Hue, our artillery fired heavily at Thuan An sea gate and Tan My port. On March 23, on the eastern flank, supported by tanks from the Tri-Thien Military Region, Quang Tri’s 3rd Battalion attacked and captured Huong Dien District headquarters, destroying the Thanh Huong position, and forcing the enemy to retreat.
On the same day, the Standing Board of the Regional Party Committee and the Command of the 5th Military Region decided to concentrate all forces, accelerate the offensive to destroy the ARVN’s 2nd Division, liberate Tam Ky (Quang Nam) and Quang Ngai Province, implementing strategic division and creating a springboard for attacking Da Nang from the south.
On 23 March, the Ba Gia Regiment, reinforced with the 8th Battalion (31st Regiment), 5th Battalion (38th Regiment) and 10 tanks and armoured vehicles, attacked in the main direction, breaking through the enemy's blockade from Suoi Da to the northern bank of Tam Ky River. The 4th and 6th Battalions (38th Regiment, 2nd Division) destroyed the 37th and 39th Battalions of the ARVN Rangers Corp, capturing Cam Khe 2, Khanh Tho Dong, and Duc Tam areas.
On the night of 23 March 1975, a strike force from the 9th Battalion, guided by guerrillas, secretly infiltrated near Truong Xuan T-Junction, preparing to attack Quang Ngai Town. A battalion from the 52nd Regiment marched to Quang Ngai to prepare for the town assault.
On March 23 in An Khe, after a day of fighting, the 12th Regiment of the 3rd Division had smashed nearly 20 outer checkpoint positions and divided into multiple spearheads attacking straight into the town, destroying and capturing thousands of enemy troops, seizing many weapons and war materials, completely liberating An Khe Town.
