Messi double powers Barca to big win over Getafe

Lionel Messi scored twice as Barcelona crushed Getafe 5-2 on Thursday (Apr 22) to stay in the hunt for the La Liga title.

The win took Barca back up to third place on 68 points, five behind leaders Atletico Madrid but with a game in hand.

* Atletico Madrid stayed in control of La Liga's title race by beating struggling Huesca 2-0 at home on Thursday (Apr 22) with goals in each half by Angel Correa and Yannick Carrasco.

* Atalanta missed the chance to go second in Serie A on Thursday (Apr 22) as AS Roma fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against the 10-man visitors at the Stadio Olimpico.

* Napoli won a 5-2 thriller against top-four rivals Lazio on Thursday to stay within touching distance of the Champions League places in Serie A.

* Red-hot striker Kelechi Iheanacho scored an 11th goal in his last eight games in all competitions as Leicester City poured more misery on woeful West Bromwich Albion with an emphatic 3-0 Premier League win at the King Power Stadium on Thursday.

* Rafael Nadal needed to go the distance for the second successive day in Barcelona, defeating Japan's Kei Nishikori to make the last-eight and stay on course for a 12th title at the tournament. The world number three triumphed 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 over 2014 and 2015 champion Nishikori and next face Britain's Cameron Norrie, a fellow left-hander, for a place in the semi-finals.

* Karolina Pliskova will face world number one Ashleigh Barty in the quarter-finals of Stuttgart's WTA clay-court tournament after seeing off Jelena Ostapenko in a three-set battle on Thursday (Apr 22). Pliskova, the sixth seed, recovered from losing the first set in a tie-break by firing down 21 aces, 10 of which came in the last set alone, for a 6-7 (7/9), 6-4, 6-3 second-round win.

* AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the Serie A club beyond his 40th birthday. Ibrahimovic is Milan's top scorer this season with 17 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions.
