According to Dr. Bach Quoc Khanh, director of the NIHBT, on September 18, 2017, the Health Minister signed Decision No. 4164/QD-BYT on the formation of the NBC, with the function of providing safe blood sources and products, as well as stem cells, to serve the demand of emergencies, patient treatments, and blood reserves for national security.
Khanh said that, during its initial days of operation, the NIHBT established a modern blood transfusion centre with an annual capacity of 90,000 blood units. Until now, the operations of the centre have increased threefold compared to the initial designed capacity. With the currently growing blood donation trend, the NIHBT is expected to receive approximately 400,000 blood units by 2020 and 600,000 blood units by 2030.

Therefore, the NIHBT has built a project on the establishment of the NBC and submitted it to the Health Ministry for approval, aiming to meet the demand for developing and enhancing the efficiency of the NBC, towards its independent operation in the future.
The establishment of the NBC marks a historic milestone in the development process of Vietnam’s blood transfusion sector, the NIHBT director said, stating that this will meet the inevitable development demand of the sector, helping it to keep pace with global development trends.
In the period of 2017-2019, the NBC will focus on recruiting and training human resources, upgrading its current infrastructure, and calling for investment in the construction of its new headquarters.
