On January 30, 2018, President Tran Dai Quang visited Dong Nai province on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Tet Offensive in Spring 1968 and the 2018 traditional Lunar New Year (Tet). It was also the last time that the Party Committee, administration and people of Dong Nai were honoured to receive him. I remember that at the provincial martyr's cemetery, the President reverently offered incense to heroic martyrs and personally presented gifts to families of 11 martyrs who sacrificed themselves in the Tet Offensive in Spring 1968. Then, despite it being late afternoon, th President still spent time visiting and presenting gifts to several typical policy beneficiary families in Tan Hiep ward, Bien Hoa city. President Tran Dai Quang left a deep impression on me and the key officials of the province for his down-to-earth and caring character. He asked Dong Nai to continue to pay more attention to social security and to better care for policy beneficiaries and people who rendered their service to the country's revolution. After the inauguration of the Long Khanh Martyrs' Temple in Dong Nai, President Tran Dai Quang also offered incense to commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the campaign to liberate Xuan Loc.

Through the aforementioned events, it is clear that President Tran Dai Quang paid special attention to the work of caring for policy beneficiaries. Through meetings and direct working sessions with President Tran Dai Quang, I personally feel that he was such a simple, open and devoted person.

A wholehearted and close leader

As an official in Ban Khoang commune, Sa Pa district, Lao Cai province, I was honoured and fortunate to welcome President Tran Dai Quang to visit and present gifts to the local disadvantaged people, on a misty and cold morning when the 2017 Lunar New Year was very near. I remember that, when informed of the information that a high-ranking Party and State officials were to make a visit to the locale, the Mong and Dao ethnic groups in the most difficult upland commune of Sa Pa district were all eager to meet and talk with the President. People flocked to the hall at the Ban Khoang commune headquarters. The crowd filled every seat and even stood outside. On arriving at the hall, President Tran Dai Quang came to meet, shake hands, and encourage his compatriots in an intimate and friendly style. It is known that Ban Khoang is a highland ethnic commune with many difficulties and had just experienced damage caused by a flash flood. President Tran Dai Quang thoroughly surveyed the lives of the local people, the learning of the local pupils, and especially the way the Mong and Dao people produce and run tourism services to have a stable income, thus promoting effective and sustainable poverty reduction. The State President talked openly but intimately, while paying attention to the commune officials and the locals who expressed their opinions and aspirations. Although it was cold and foggy, combined with bad conditions for travel, the President walked down to visit the resettlement site for the Mong people who had lost their homes due to the impact of the previous massive flash flood. Here, President Tran Dai Quang visited and handed gifts to local disadvantaged and policy beneficiary families.

Hearing that President Tran Dai Quang had passed away, I mourn for the high ranking official of the Party and State, who was close and devoted himself to the people.

President Tran Dai Quang visits and presents gift to workers in Binh Duong province.

Director of Deo Nai Coal JSC, Pham Duy Thanh recalled President Tran Dai Quang's visit to the company to attend the "Tree Planting Festival" on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2017. During the visit, President Tran Dai Quang held talks with workers at the company and expressed his wish that the coal industry would pay due attention to environmental restoration after mining while ensuring the safety of people and equipment during the exploitation process. He also told the company to care for the material and spiritual life of its workers; enhance the efficiency of its production and business activities, and restructure the coal industry according to the Party guidelines and State policies.

President Tran Dai Quang's special care for workers in the coal industry has always been a great source of motivation for the industry to overcome difficulties and challenges on the path of progress and to contribute to the cause of provincial construction and development of Quang Ninh. Over recent times, the workers in the coal industry, and Vietnamese people as a whole, have always followed and showed concern for the health of President Tran Dai Quang. Despite his serious illness, President Tran Dai Quang did not rest, working until the last moment of his life.

Remembering President Tran Dai Quang’s instructions

I and the workers of Hai Phong Port, along with the people of Hai Phong city, am deeply saddened by the passing of President Tran Dai Quang. The simple images of the head of state which we have seen through the media and the President's visit to Hai Phong port city are always carved in our minds. In particular, we always remember the instructions imparted by the President with the Party, government, workers and the people of the city during his visit to Hai Phong before the 2017 Lunar New Year holiday. The President recommended that Hai Phong focus on improving the investment environment; continuing to develop its infrastructure, especially transport infrastructure; build modern seaports; and care for the people's lives. The advice has strengthened the workforce of the Hai Phong port in particular, and Hai Phong city in general, in the expansion and development of Hai Phong, helping it to realise the aim of becoming a modern international port gate, a gateway to the sea of the northern provinces and cities, a growth hub of the North, and an international city in the near future.

President Tran Dai Quang presents gifts to ethnic minority workers in Gia Lai province.

I still remember the day when the State President paid a Tet (New Year festival) visit to the Ko Sier villagers. It was made on the morning of January 25, 2015, ahead of the Year of the Goat, when comrade Tran Dai Quang was serving as a Politburo member, Minister of Public Security and Head of the Central Highlands Steering Committee. I and my fellow villagers woke up early and dressed ourselves nicely in our Ede ethnic group’s traditional brocade costumes. When he arrived, the villagers gathered at the village’s cultural community house. Serving as a high-ranking official of the Party and State, he looked modest and friendly. He shook hands with us and asked us about the locals’ living standards and production activities, as well as the academic performance of the children.

During the later talks, I found that comrade Tran Dai Quang gave special attention to the life of the Ko Sier villagers and the ethnic minority groups in the Central Highlands region in general. He kept asking the provincial Party Committee and authorities at all levels to care for the living of the locales and the children in particular so that they wouldn’t drop out of school due to their difficult circumstances. He also called for strengthened solidarity and to promote the building of good examples of families and villages, to raise a high sense of vigilance in order to not follow instigations to break the law. After he was elected President, he always spent time visiting local people and villages every time he had working trips to Central Highlands.
