Mai, who is also the head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation, attended the congress along with 250 delegates representing 46 ethnic groups in the province.
Reports at the event showed that Thai Nguyen has more than 384,000 ethnic minority people, accounting for 29.87% of the provincial population. In the past five years, the province has effectively implemented the Party and State’s policies on supporting the ethnic community, while also developing its own specific policies for ethnic minorities with a total investment of about VND6 trillion, helping to boost the local socio-economic development in the ethnic areas.
Up to now, 61 out of 114 ethnic minority communes have reached 19 criteria under the new-style rural area building, while all hamlets and villages have access to the national grid and 100% of ethnic minority communes have health stations.
Speaking at the event, Politburo member Mai highly praised the achievements by Thai Nguyen in the fields of socio-economic development, especially in ethnic affairs, poverty reduction and building a new-style countryside, as well as developing public staff who are of ethnic minorities.
In the recent years, the local Party committees, authorities, Fatherland Front and socio-political organisations have thoroughly grasped the Party and State's views on ethnic affairs to renovate the mass mobilisation work and effectively implement ethnic policies, causing ethnic minorities’ living standards constantly improve, Mai noted.
The senior Party official suggested Thai Nguyen continue to focus on implementing improved policies to consolidate the achieved results, while improving the lives of ethnic minorities and enhancing opportunities for them to have better and fairer access to the national and local socio-economic development achievements.
The province should promote its capacity in addressing legitimate rights and interests for ethnic compatriots, as well as handling issues related to them, Mai added.
On the occasion, she presented the second-class Labour Order awarded by the Party and State to the Provincial Committee for Ethnic Affairs.
