Nguyen Tan Cuong named Chief of General Staff of Vietnam’s armed forces

Colonel General Nguyen Tan Cuong was formally appointed as Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnamese People’s Army at a ceremony presided over by President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on June 3.

He was also assigned as a member of the Central Military Commission.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Phuc extended his congratulations to Colonel General Cuong on his new role and spoke highly of his military competence and political morality.

The state leader expressed his expectations that Colonel General Cuong will continue enhancing his capabilities for the cause of firmly defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity, helping ensure a stable and peaceful environment for national development.

For his part, Colonel General Cuong thanked the Party and State for placing confidence in him and pledged to follow the President’s instructions in order to successfully carry out the duties assigned to him.

Colonel General Nguyen Tan Cuong was born in 1966 in the northern province of Ha Nam and held various positions in the military before being appointed as Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnamese People’s Army.

He was commanding officer of the 1st Corps from 2011-2013 and commanding officer of the 4th Corps from 2014-2018.

Cuong was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff in November 2018 and Deputy Minister of Defence in December 2019. He was promoted to the rank of colonel general in January 2021.
