Priority given to developing artificial intelligence technology

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming one of the key technologies contributing to the socio-economic development of countries. In Vietnam, AI is one of the technologies that received priority for development and further application, as it can help the country actively participate in the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0).

In 2021, the Prime Minister approved the National Strategy on the Research, Development and Application of Artificial Intelligence until 2030. The strategy targets to turn AI into an important technology field in Vietnam, during the fourth industrial revolution.

Under the strategy, Vietnam will strive to become an innovation centre, which develops artificial intelligence solutions and applications throughout the ASEAN region and the world by 2030.

When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in Vietnam, many businesses utilised AI technology to support people’s life during social distancing. For example, CyberPurify Company has used AI to identify content that poses potential harm to children on the internet, thus helping children use social networks more safely.

Meanwhile, EM&AI Joint Stock Company provided a comprehensive AI technology solution for customer care centres to improve the customer experience, whilst helping businesses to reduce their operating costs by 60%.

Accordingly, the company has developed an AI application technology to process the natural Vietnamese language, which acts as a virtual assistant that can understand the intentions and feelings of customers through their talks and tone of voice.

Director of Quy Nhon AI Research and Application Centre Vu Hong Chien said that the Centre has established an ecosystem of AI products and is working on cooperation projects with the world’s leading facilities in various fields, such as computer vision and natural language processing.

The centre has not only developed AI solutions but also focused on training high-quality human resources in this field, he noted.

According to him, Vietnam has the advantage to advance in the fourth industrial revolution, as the country is currently in the "golden population structure” period and Vietnamese people are adept at acquiring the technology.

He predicted that in the next two or three years, Vietnam will witness an increase in human resources working in AI technology, thanks to the implementation of the National Strategy on Research, Development and Application of AI.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Thu Lam, General Secretary of the Vietnam Club of Faculties-Institutes-Schools-Universities (FISU), said that several initiatives have been undertaken to promote the Vietnam-Australia AI community.

The initiatives aim to support scientists, experts, research and training organisations, and businesses, and to help them connect with partners around the world, in which, the FISU is the venue for experts to meet and exchange experiences.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy, noted with pleasure that going back many years ago, AI technology was still a strange concept with a limited application; however, this technology has developed more robustly in today’s life.

Currently, AI technology has been fostered in many fields, industries, and businesses, and the human resources working in the field have been enhanced, creating favourable conditions for the development of more AI products. All of these activities are implemented on the right track, following the National Strategy on AI Research, Development and Application.
