Giant muntjac, whose scientific name is Muntiacus vuquangensis, has been categorised as an endangered species on Vietnam’s Red List.
The discovery was made from a collaborative programme between the Pu Hu Nature Reserve and Hanoi National University’s Centre for Resources and Environmental Research to survey animals and plants at the reserve.
Analysis of photos captured in late 2015 showed that there were at least two of this rare animal at the Pu Hu Nature Reserve.
The giant muntjac was first discovered in 1994 in Vu Quang district in the central province of Ha Tinh. It looks like a deer but is bigger.
The animal is mainly found in Nghe An, Ha Tinh, western Quang Nam and Lam Dong provinces as well as in Laos.
