Salah double fires Liverpool to victory at West Ham

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah ended his Premier League goal drought in style by scoring twice as the champions raided the capital again to crush West Ham United 3-1 on Sunday (Jan 31).

Liverpool came to life after a first half almost devoid of goalmouth action at the London Stadium, with Salah providing two superb finishes as Liverpool moved into third spot, with 40 points from 21 games, four behind leaders Manchester City who they host next weekend.

* Brighton & Hove Albion claimed their first home Premier League win of the season as Leandro Trossard's first-half goal proved enough for a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Out-of-form Tottenham's second defeat of the week leaves them in sixth place, six points off the top four.

* VfL Wolfsburg cruised to a 3-0 home win over Freiburg on Sunday to move into third place in the Bundesliga with their third straight win. Unbeaten at home this season, Wolfsburg now have 35 points from 19 games, three behind RB Leipzig and 10 off leaders Bayern Munich.

* Napoli earned a 2-0 victory over lowly Parma thanks to a goal in each half on Sunday, with their Serie A win easing the pressure on under-fire coach Gennaro Gattuso.

* Three goals inside the first half an hour earned AS Roma a comfortable 3-1 victory over Hellas Verona in Serie A on Sunday, with the win moving Paulo Fonseca's side above champions Juventus and into third in the standings. The victory moves Roma on to 40 points, one point ahead of Juventus in fourth having played one game more. They are six points behind leaders AC Milan.

* Paris St Germain suffered their first defeat under new coach Mauricio Pochettino, losing 3-2 at lowly Lorient in added time as Lille moved top of the Ligue 1 standings with a 1-0 home victory against Dijon on Sunday. Olympique Lyonnais, who beat Girondins de Bordeaux 2-1 on Friday, are second on 46 points with third-placed PSG a further point adrift.

* AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly said on Sunday he had tested positive for COVID-19, meaning six of Formula One's 20 race drivers have now contracted the virus.

* All but three of the Australian Open cohort of more than 1,000 players, coaches and officials have been cleared from quarantine in Melbourne ahead of the Grand Slam, health officials said on Monday (Feb 1).

* Manchester United youngster Facundo Pellistri has joined La Liga side Alaves on loan for the rest of the season, the Premier League club said on Sunday. The 19-year-old Uruguayan forward has yet to make a first-team appearance for United, having joined them from Penarol in October for a reported 9 million pounds (US$12.34 million).

* Atletico Madrid's Luis Suarez fired in two goals as they thrashed Cadiz 4-2 away in an action-packed game on Sunday to march 10 points clear at the top of La Liga. Atletico have an impressive 50 points at the halfway stage of the season, clear of nearest challengers Real Madrid, who lost 2-1 at home to Levante on Saturday, with a game in hand.

* Lazio secured their fifth win in a row with a 3-1 victory at Atalanta in Serie A on Sunday which moved Simone Inzaghi's side above their opponents into sixth in the standings, level on 37 points with fifth-placed AS Roma.

* Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel claimed his fourth cyclocross world title when he beat long-time rival Wout Van Aert of Belgium in Ostend, Belgium, on Sunday. Van der Poel completed the eight-lap course featuring sandy sections on the shores of the North Sea, in 58:57 with Van Aert coming home third.

* Patrick Bamford scored one and created two goals as Leeds United ended Leicester City’s seven-match unbeaten run and denied Brendan Rodgers’ side a move up to second in the Premier League with an entertaining 3-1 victory on Sunday. Leeds remain in 12th, behind Southampton on goal difference, while Leicester are third with 39 points – two points behind second-placed Manchester United who were held to a goalless draw at Arsenal on Saturday.

* Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday signed attacking midfielder Demarai Gray from Leicester City on a contract to 2022, the Bundesliga club said. The 24-year-old, who had fallen out of favour under Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers, is to boost Leverkusen's attacking power, with the Bundesliga club struggling recently.

* England's Paul Casey claimed his 15th European Tour title after a closing round of two-under-par 70 handed him a dominant four-shot victory at the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday.

* Chelsea notched up their first win under Thomas Tuchel on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Burnley thanks to goals by Spanish defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso who have both been given a chance to shine under the German coach. The win pushed Chelsea – who drew 0-0 last week against Wolves in Tuchel's first game – up to seventh in the Premier League standings, 11 points behind leaders Manchester City.

* Kilmarnock have parted ways with manager Alex Dyer by mutual consent after Saturday's 3-2 loss at St Johnstone, the Scottish Premiership club said. The defeat was Kilmarnock's third in a row and left them ninth in the table on 24 points from 25 games, only five points ahead of bottom club Hamilton.

* Former world number one Venus Williams produced a vintage display to outclass Netherlands' Arantxa Rus in straight sets and storm into the second round of the Yarra Valley Classic as a packed week of Australian Open warm-up events kicked off on Sunday. The tournament is one of six arranged by Tennis Australia before the start of the Australian Open to allow players a chance of some match action after two weeks in quarantine hotels.

* Former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko fought back from a set down to reach the second round of the Gippsland Trophy as a raft of Australian Open warm-up tournaments got underway at Melbourne Park on Sunday. Top seeds Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka were given byes and will join the fray in the second round.

* Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign centre back Ben Davies from Championship side Preston North End, Sky Sports reported, with the Premier League champions running out of options in defence amid an injury crisis. The report added that Liverpool would pay Preston around two million pounds (US$2.74 million) for the 25-year-old, whose contract at the second-tier side ends in June. The deal is set to be completed on transfer deadline day on Monday.
