Soccer-Antonio double helps West Ham thrash 10-man Leicester

Michail Antonio became West Ham United’s all-time Premier League top scorer after netting twice to help secure a resounding 4-1 home win on Monday (Aug 23) over Leicester City, who had Ayoze Perez sent off late in the first half.

* The US Open will offer total prize money of US$57.5 million this year, eclipsing the record payout of US$57.2 million set in 2019, tournament organisers said on Monday. Despite the overall increase this year, prize money for the two singles winners has come down from US$3 million to US$2.5 million, with the runner-up cheque also reduced to US$1.25 million, a decrease of US$50,000 from 2020.

* Liverpool's Switzerland winger Xherdan Shaqiri has signed a three-year contract with Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais, the two clubs announced on Monday. Lyon added that the deal for the 29-year-old was worth an initial six million euros (US$7.04 million), with a maximum of five million euros in add-ons.

* Norwich City have signed full back Brandon Williams from Manchester United on a season-long loan, the two Premier League sides said on Monday. The England Under-21 international made 14 appearances for United in all competitions last season but was unable to hold down a regular place on the left side of defence due to the resurgence of Luke Shaw and the arrival of Alex Telles in October.

* Sixteen individuals tested positive for COVID-19 in the Premier League's latest round of tests carried out on 3,060 players and club staff, the league said on Monday. The third round of tests conducted between Aug. 16-22 showed an increase in infections after the English top flight recorded 20 cases in the first two weeks of testing.

* Bayern Munich's Canadian defender Alphonso Davies sent a message of support to the Refugee Paralympic Team on Monday, describing them as the "world's most courageous sports team" ahead of the Paralympic Games which kick off in Tokyo on Tuesday.

* Jose Mourinho took reaching another managerial milestone in his stride as the AS Roma coach moved on to 50 Serie A wins in the fastest time with a 3-1 success over Fiorentina on Sunday. Back in Italy for a second spell, having steered Inter Milan to the treble in 2010, the victory in his first Roma match means Mourinho has reached 50 Serie A successes in the fastest time for a coach in the three points for a win era - since 1994-95.

* Nice and Olympique de Marseille have been summoned to a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday after their Ligue 1 match on Sunday had to be abandoned due to crowd trouble, said the French professional league (LFP). The match at Nice's Allianz Riviera was abandoned in the 75th minute on Sunday after Marseille players clashed with home fans who pelted them with missiles and stormed onto the pitch.

* Erik Lamela continued his flying start to life with Sevilla as the Argentine struck a last-minute winner for the Andalusians to give them a 1-0 victory over Getafe in LaLiga on Monday. The win means they join Atletico Madrid as the only two sides with a 100% LaLiga record after two weeks of the season.

* Brahim Diaz's early goal was enough to earn AC Milan a 1-0 victory at Sampdoria in their opening match of the Serie A season on Monday. The visitors got their campaign up and running quickly in Genoa after Diaz, who rejoined Milan on loan from Real Madrid for the next two seasons, squeezed the ball home after nine minutes to break the deadlock.

* Liverpool have refused to allow Mohamed Salah to travel to Africa for World Cup qualifiers with Egypt next month because he would be forced to quarantine on his return to England, the Egyptian Football Association said on Monday.

* Manchester City will unveil statues made in honour of former players David Silva and Vincent Kompany outside the Etihad Stadium ahead of Saturday's Premier League game at home to Arsenal, the club said on Monday. A third statue, in tribute to all-time leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero, who left the club at the end of last season after a decade-long association, will be unveiled in 2022.

* Captain Catriona Matthew selected a trio of Solheim Cup rookies for Team Europe as they mount their title defence against world number one Nelly Korda and the favourites United States at the biennial tournament at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Newcomers Nanna Madsen of Denmark, who finished fifth on Sunday at the women's British Open, Ireland's Leona Maguire and Finland's Matilda Castren were among Matthew’s six selections.

* Benfica's Germany forward Luca Waldschmidt has joined Bundesliga team Wolfsburg in a four-year deal worth 12 million euros (US$14.06 million), the Portuguese club confirmed on Monday. Waldschmidt, who has two goals in seven appearances for Germany, returns to the Bundesliga after a year, having spent two seasons at Freiburg from 2018-2020.

* Son Heung-min has been named in the Republic of Korea's squad for the opening two matches of the next phase of Asia's World Cup preliminaries despite injury concerns following Tottenham Hotspur's 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 29-year-old was replaced by Harry Kane in the 72nd minute at Molineux on Sunday (Aug 22) as Spurs notched their second straight win in a perfect start to the Premier League season.

* Manchester City have not yet decided if they will sign a new striker to replace Sergio Aguero, manager Pep Guardiola said, with the summer transfer window set to close next week. British media have heavily linked Premier League champions City with Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has said the England captain is not for sale.

* Arsenal are dealing with a challenging situation with the squad hit by COVID-19 cases and injuries, manager Mikel Arteta said after they lost to Chelsea, their second defeat in as many games at the start of the Premier League season. After a season-opening loss at newcomers Brentford, Arteta's team were beaten 2-0 by London rivals Chelsea at home on Sunday.
