Son La strengthens coordination in safeguarding Viet Nam-Laos border

In recent years, border guard control stations under the Son La Provincial Border Guard Command have stepped up border defence diplomacy and organised twinning agreements with armed forces units of Laos. These activities have helped strengthen coordination in border management and protection while maintaining security and order along the shared Viet Nam-Laos border.

The twinning arrangements aim to concretise the policy of the Central Military Commission, the Ministry of National Defence, the Border Guard Command, and the Son La Provincial Border Guard Command on international integration, defence diplomacy, and international cooperation in border affairs.

According to the Son La Provincial Border Guard Command, six out of nine pairs of units have so far held twinning ceremonies.

Among them, Pu Hao Border Guard Control Station under Muong Lan Border Guard Post has twinned with Ka Lang Police Station, while Na Vac Border Guard Control Station, also under Muong Lan Border Guard Post, has established ties with Huoi Mo Border Guard Control Station under Border Guard Company 212 of the Houaphanh Provincial Military Command of Laos.

In border gate areas, Na Cai Auxiliary Border Gate Control Station under Chieng On Border Guard Post has twinned with Sop Dung Auxiliary Border Gate Station, while Keo Muong Border Guard Control Station under Chieng On Border Guard Post has established ties with Na Khang Control Station under the Houaphanh Provincial Police of Laos.

The remaining pairs of units will continue to organise twinning ceremonies, with the goal of completing the process in November 2026.

Under the signed agreements, the two sides commit to strictly implementing the provisions of the agreement on regulations for the management of the land border and border gates between the two countries; respecting each other’s independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity; and complying with the laws of each country.

The two sides also agreed to maintain information exchanges and coordinate in managing and protecting the borderline and national border marker system, controlling entry and exit as well as imports and exports, and managing residence and travel activities in border areas.

They will also coordinate to ensure security, public order, and social safety in border and border gate areas, while combating illegal drug trafficking and other cross-border violations of law.

In addition to their professional duties, the units will regularly conduct visits and exchanges on the occasion of festivals, New Year celebrations and major anniversaries of the two countries, thereby strengthening mutual understanding, trust, and bonds between officers and soldiers of both sides.

The twinning agreements between Son La border guard control stations and Lao units contribute to establishing a regular coordination mechanism, improving the effectiveness of information exchange, and enhancing the capacity to proactively address issues arising along the border.

They also provide an opportunity for the two sides to coordinate communication and encourage border residents to strictly comply with regulations on border and border gate management as well as the laws of each country.

Through practical border defence diplomacy activities, the border protection forces of the two countries continue to uphold solidarity and friendship, coordinate closely to maintain security and order, and build a Viet Nam-Laos border of peace, friendship, stability, and development.
