Nguyen Van Cong earned Vietnam’s first wrestling gold of the day by beating the Philippine opponent in the men’s 57kg freestyle final before teammate Can Tat Du snatched another in the men’s 70kg freestyle half an hour later.

Inspired by those victories, Vietnamese wrestlers went to perform brilliantly in the remaining five final deciders and secured five more golds thanks to Nguyen Thi My Hanh (women’s 62kg), Kieu Thi Ly (women’s 62kg), Nguyen Huu Dinh (men’s 61kg freestyle), Nguyen Xuan Dinh (men’s 65kg freestyle) and Ha Van Hieu (men’s 125kg freestyle).

The athletics team brought home three more titles for Vietnam with the success of Do Quoc Luat (men’s 3,000m steepleschase), Nguyen Thi Huyen (women’s 400m hurdles) and Nguyen Thi Oanh (women’s 3,000m steepleschase).

Nguyen Thi Oanh seizes gold and breaks the SEA Games record in the women's 3,000m steepleschase event.

Particularly, Nguyen Thi Oanh broke the SEA Games record with a time of 10:00.02, nearly one minute faster than the silver medalist Joida Gadot Gagnao (Philippines, 10:59.91).

The kickboxing team contributed another gold medal after Nguyen Xuan Phuong defeated his Malaysian rival 3-0 in the men’s -57kg final.

Together with the glut of golds, Vietnam won additional silvers in athletics (women’s 400m hurdles, men’s 3,000m steepleschase, men’s decathlon), jujitsu (women’s -62kg) and billiards (men’s individual 9-ball pool).

The jujitsu team brought home four more bronze medals in the men’s -94kg, -120kg, -85kg and -56kg categories.
