The women’s team, coached by Mai Duc Chung, successfully defended their SEA Games title by seeing off arch-rivals Thailand 1-0 in the final match. This is also the sixth time that Vietnam has claimed the women’s football gold medal at the region’s largest sporting event.

Meanwhile, under the guidance of coach Park Hang-seo, Vietnam U22s produced an impressive journey in the Philippines, maintaining an unbeaten run throughout the entire tournament and clinching their first-ever SEA Games gold medal in men’s football after 60 years of waiting.

Speaking at the meeting, PM Phuc praised the players for having fought bravely to bring glory to the homeland, affirming that their triumphs were not simply victories in sports but were also victories of patriotism, solidarity, determination and sense of responsibilities before the people.

He conveyed his special thanks to the two coaches, Park Hang-seo and Mai Duc Chung, who inspired the players and applied appropriate training methods to help the Vietnamese teams harvest such success.

The leader expressed his wish that Vietnamese football will have a more organised roadmap to go further in the immediate future, with the 2020 AFC U23 Championship in Thailand and then the 31st SEA Games to be hosted in Vietnam in 2021.

He stressed the importance of caring for youth football training to seek talents for men’s and women’s football, asking the sports sector to continue researching better incentives and preferential policies for football coaches and players.
