Dien Bien cycling event wraps up

Nhan Dan/VNA – A final race along a road named after the legendary General Vo Nguyen Giap concluded the national ‘Return to Dien Bien’ cycling race in the northwestern city on May 6.

More than 170 cyclists from Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia and Timor Leste participated in the six-day event, which was part of activities held to mark the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory over the French.

They rode from Hanoi to the northwestern cities of Hoa Binh and Son La before arriving in Dien Bien.

The first prize winners were Nguyen Thi That in the women’s event and Nguyen Tan Hoai in the men’s category.

The stage race was an occasion for the athletes to pay tribute to the war heroes who sacrificed their lives in the historic triumph and for national liberation.

At the closing ceremony, the People’s Army newspaper, the race organiser, granted 120 scholarships (each worth VND1 million) to children of Dien Bien soldiers as well as two houses worth VND120 million (US$5,640) to the families of fallen war heroes.
