Vietnam wins Asian poomsae gold medals

Nhan Dan Online – Vietnam’s taekwondo poomsae team lived up to expectations, taking three gold, four silver and two bronze medals on May 25 at the 21st Asian Taekwondo Championships and the 3rd Asian Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, held in Uzbekistan.

Gold medals were captured by Chau Tuyet Van, Nguyen Thi Le Kim and Nguyen Thuy Xuan Linh in the women’s team event; Tuyet Van, Le Kim, Xuan Linh, Thien Phung and Thanh Trung in the mixed team category and Ngo Thi Thuy Dung in the women’s individual discipline.

The combat competition is taking place in Tashkent from May 26-28. Twelve martial artists, including six women, are representing Vietnam in 12 weight categories.

Hopes are pinned on famous names such as Nguyen Trong Cuong, Le Huynh Chau, Doan Thi Huong Giang and Pham Thi Thu Huyen.

Trong Cuong is expected to defend the men’s 87kg combat championship title which he won at the previous edition of the tournament hosted in Vietnam two years ago.

After returning from the Uzbekistan campaign, the national taekwondo team will leave for the Republic of Korea (RoK) for a three-month training course to prepare for the 2014 Asian Games, scheduled in September in Incheon, RoK.
