Vinh claimed the victory in convincing fashion, leading the list with the highest score of 2,020 points, far surpassing runner-up Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (swimming) with 1,639 points and third-place Ly Hoang Nam (tennis) with 1,075 points.

Vinh was thought of as most likely to take this years title after the significant milestone he established for Vietnamese sport at the recent 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The military shooter finished first and broke the Olympic record in the men’s 10m air pistol event with 202.5 points, just 0.4 of a point ahead of Sao Paulo-born Felipe Almeida Wu. Later, Vinh went on to excel in the men’s 50m slow fire pistol discipline claiming a silver medal with 191.3 points.

Nguyen Thi Nhung, coach of the national shooting team, was voted the best trainer of the year with 1,901 points, a deserving reward for the “steel woman” following her significant contribution to Vinh’s Olympic success.

Swimming coach Dang Anh Tuan followed in second place with 712 points fewer after leading his student, top Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, to a gold medal and a new record in the women’s 400m individual medley category at the 2016 Asian Swimming Championships in Japan. Football trainer Hoang Anh Tuan, who coached the national U-19 football team to qualify for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, came in third place with 1,006 points.

Le Van Cong is the first Vietnamese Paralympic champion.

Powerlifter Le Van Cong topped the vote for the best Vietnamese athlete with disabilities in 2016 with 807 points. Cong earned Vietnam the first Paralympic gold medal by winning the men’s 49kg weight class in Rio de Janeiro with a lift of 183kg, which also surpassed the world and Paralympic records in this category.

Paralympic silver medalist Vo Thanh Tung (swimming) and bronze medalist Cao Ngoc Hung (javelin) ended up in second and third place with 677 and 550 points, respectively.

Cong’s trainer Nguyen Hong Phuc was voted the best trainer for disabled athletes with 677 points, 115 points ahead of swimming trainer Dong Quoc Cuong and 216 points ahead of athletics trainer Dang Van Phuc.
