Regarding the proposal from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), this afternoon (July 14), under the chair of Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, Head of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism hosted a meeting with the Hanoi authorities, the Ministry of Health and other related agencies on the hosting of the team’s World Cup qualifiers at home.

Accordingly, the government gave the green light for the plan, with a view to both ensuring the organisation of cultural and sports events to meet fans’ interest, while ensuring safety in the prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic.

The meeting agreed to host Vietnam's home games in the final qualifying round, assigning the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to work with the VFF to finalise a detailed plan with all epidemic prevention regulations met, in line with the guidelines and principles from world football governing body FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Vietnam playing at home in the final World Cup qualifiers will help improve the prestige and image of Vietnam in pandemic control through the hosting of world-class sporting events, helping the team prepare well to achieve the best results in the competition, thereby aiming for higher development goals in the upcoming stages.

In order to prepare, the VFF will develop a plan and specific solutions on the hosting of the team’s home matches and send it to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for submission to the Government.

One of the most important contents in the organisation of the team's matches in the World Cup qualifiers is the isolation mechanism for foreign team members and others upon entering Vietnam.

Based on evaluations from the organisation of international matches by FIFA and AFC in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the VFF proposes to apply special isolation mechanisms under a closed bubble model with the strict control of the health authorities, as was successfully applied at a number of major international events such as the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, the recent EURO 2020 and which will be seen at the Tokyo Olympics in the near future.

Vietnam will play 10 matches in the final qualifiers from September 2021 to March 2022, including five matches at home and five away.

Coach Park Hang-seo’s side will commence their campaign with an opening Group B match against Saudi Arabia on September 2, before hosting Australia at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi five days later.

The Vietnamese side are joined by powerhouse Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, China and Oman in Group B, with Group A featuring the remaining six teams, including the continent’s second-ranked Iran, the Republic of Korea, the UAE, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.
