Duyen settled for fifth place overall with a total lift of 208kg, up to 28kg fewer than that of the gold medalist Kuo Hsing-chun from Taiwan (China).

In the snatch, the Vietnamese successfully lifted 95kg on her second attempt, ranking fourth behind Kuo Hsing-chun (103kg), Tchakounte Dora Meiriama (France, 96kg) and Guryeva Polina (Turkmenistan, 96kg).

Duyen conquered the first attempt of 113kg in the clean and jerk, but failed at 119kg in the next two lifts, which was not enough to ensure her a podium finish.

Kuo turned her Olympic bronze into glittering gold as she powered her way to the 59kg top honour, smashing three Olympic records with a snatch lift of 103kg, a clean and jerk lift of 133kg, and a total lift of 236kg.

Kuo Hsing-chun proves too strong in this category.

Polina Guryeva won Turkmenistan’s first Olympic medal with the silver for her total lift of 217kg (96kg snatch and 121kg clean & jerk). Meanwhile, Andoh Mikiko of Japan clinched an emotional bronze lifting a total of 214kg (94kg snatch and 120kg clean & jerk).

At 6pm today, Vietnamese badminton ace Nguyen Tien Minh will continue his group stage campaign with a Group L clash against Ade Resky Dwicahyo (Azerbaijan).

Meanwhile, swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang will enter the preliminary round of the men’s 800m freestyle in the evening.
