Football - Haaland scores late winner as Dortmund down Hoffenheim

Striker Erling Haaland fired a stoppage-time winner to give Borussia Dortmund a thrilling 3-2 win over Hoffenheim on Friday (August 27) that lifted them to the top of the Bundesliga standings.

Dortmund held on until the referee blew the final whistle in the 98th minute to go top the table on six points, ahead of Wolfsburg on goal difference having played one more game.

* Substitute Joaquin Correa had a debut to remember as his late double earned Inter Milan a 3-1 win at Hellas Verona in Serie A on Friday. Correa, who only completed his loan move to the Serie A champions from Lazio on Thursday, came off the bench to fire Inter 2-1 ahead seven minutes from time before adding a fine third in stoppage time to seal the win for his new side.

* Netherlands midfielder Donny van de Beek has been dropped from new coach Louis van Gaal's squad for next week’s World Cup qualifiers but Steven Bergwijn and Denzel Dumfries are recalled. The coach announced changes for the three Group G matches away to Norway on Sep 1 and at home to Montenegro on Sep 4 and Turkey three days later at a news conference on Friday.

* Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espirito Santo said on Friday that he was pleased with how the club had handled the recent speculation over the future of Harry Kane after the striker confirmed this week he would be staying at the club. England captain Kane was linked with a move to Manchester City but the transfer never materialised and Kane confirmed on Wednesday that he would stay at Spurs.

* Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola clarified comments about his future on Friday and said he had no plans to leave the Premier League champions when his contract runs out in 2023.

* Leicester City will face Napoli, Poland's Legia Warsaw and Spartak Moscow in the Europa League this season after being drawn in Group C on Friday. City's Premier League rivals West Ham United, who are making their group stage debut in the competition, have been handed trips to Croatia, Belgium and Austria after being drawn against Dinamo Zagreb, Genk and Rapid Vienna in Group H.

* Everton will not sell striker Richarlison, manager Rafa Benitez said on Friday (Aug 27), amid speculation that Ligue 1 club Paris Saint Germain are keen to sign the Brazil international. Sky Sports reported earlier that PSG would try to sign 24-year-old Richarlison as a replacement for Kylian Mbappe, 22, should the France forward join Real Madrid after the LaLiga club offered 180 million euros (US$211.61 million).

* Tennis fans 12 years or older will be required to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccine in order to attend the US Open, tournament officials announced Friday, just three days before the main draw was set to begin. The New York City mayor's office on Friday mandated proof of vaccine to enter Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the major puts on its primetime matches, the United States Tennis Association said.

* Coach Roberto Mancini has recalled all but the injured Leonardo Spinazzola from Italy's triumphant Euro 2020 squad for their World Cup qualifiers. Mancini has called up 34 players for qualifiers against Bulgaria, Switzerland and Lithuania, with 25 of the 26 who were present in Italy's European Championship success last month involved in the latest group.

* Olympique Lyonnais claimed their first win of the Ligue 1 season when Moussa Dembele's first-half goal helped them to secure a 1-0 win at Nantes on Friday. Leaders Paris St Germain travel to Reims on Sunday with new signing Lionel Messi expected to make his Ligue 1 debut.

* Fearful of losing their England and Spain-based players over quarantine restrictions, Brazil on Friday called up an additional nine footballers for next month's triple header of World Cup qualifiers. Of the original 25 players called up for Brazil’s games against Chile, Argentine and Peru, 11 play in England or Spain.

* Real Madrid's Brazil midfielder Casemiro has signed a new four-year deal, the LaLiga club said on Friday. The Brazilian has been a mainstay at Real, making 191 league appearances since joining in 2012.

* Mexican Sergio Perez will race on with Red Bull next year alongside Max Verstappen, the Formula 1 team said in a statement on Friday. Perez joined Red Bull from Racing Point, now Aston Martin, and won in Azerbaijan in June - his second F1 victory after the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain.

* Max Verstappen put Red Bull at the top of the Formula One timesheets before spinning out of Friday's practice for the Belgian Grand Prix. Finn Valtteri Bottas, who beat the Red Bull driver to the fastest time during the opening hour of practice, was second for Mercedes. Hamilton, who is gunning for a landmark 100th win this weekend but ended the first session 18th, recovered to third.

* Asako Takakura has quit as head coach of Japan's women's football team, bringing an end to more than five years in charge of the side she led to the 2018 Women's Asian Cup title. The 53-year-old leaves after her team fell short of expectations at this year's Olympic Games in Tokyo, where Japan were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Sweden.
