SEA Games: Vietnam’s gold medal tally increased to 12

Karate artist Nguyen Thi Hong Anh finished off Malaysian challenger, Misty Philip, in a thrilling kumite 68kg final on the afternoon of August 22, thereby securing an additional gold medal for Vietnam at the ongoing 29th SEA Games in Malaysia.

Despite falling behind 1-3 during the majority of the match, Anh produced an accurate and powerful kick on last minute, which was marked by three points and helped the Vietnamese fighter to reverse the situation for an aggregate 4-3 victory.

This is the first title won by the Vietnamese karate team in Kuala Lumpur and is also one of the four gold medals claimed by Vietnamese athletes as of today.

The remaining three titles went to Nguyen Thi Thi in petanque, Dang Nam in gymnastics and Nguyen Thi Nhu Hoa in fencing.

Thi excelled in the women’s singles event, whilst Nam topped the men’s ring competition with 14.3 points.

Hoa was crowned champion in the women’s epee discipline after defeating her Philippine opponent with a score of 15-10.

In addition to the four gold medals, Vietnamese athletes also brought home one more silver thanks to Pham Phuoc Hung in the men’s ring event, and six other bronzes, including three in karate, one in boxing, one in wushu and one petanque.

In regards to track and field, Le Tu Chinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen qualified for the women’s 100m dash finals, while Quach Cong Lich and Phan Khac Hoang made it through to the men’s 400m hurdles finals.

Concerning futsal, Vietnam brilliantly defeated Myanmar 6-1 thanks to goals scored by Van Vu, Thai Huy, Ngoc Son (2), Thanh Tin and goalkeeper Van Huy.

Notably in shooting, Vietnam’s Olympic champion Hoang Xuan Vinh was not successful in the men’s 50m pistol discipline.

As of 5.30pm today, Vietnam is temporarily sitting at third in the medal tally with 12 golds, eight silvers and 18 bronzes, behind Malaysia and Singapore with 32 and 13 gold medals, respectively.
