Kejelcha narrowly misses world indoor mile record

Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha fell one-hundredth of a second short of the world indoor mile record and Kenya's Michael Saruni clocked the third fastest indoor 800m of all-time as young Africans lit up the NYRR Millrose Games in New York on Saturday.

Kejelcha raced home in three minutes 48.46 seconds as the 21-year-old almost took down Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj's 1997 world record. Saruni won the 800m in a national record 1:43.98. Only Denmark's Kenya-born world record holder Wilson Kipketer has run faster, with times of 1:42.67 and 1:43.96 in 1997.

* Substitute Lautaro Martinez scored Inter Milan's first Serie A goal this year to give them a much-needed 1-0 win at Parma on Saturday. Luciano Spalletti's side remained third in Serie A, and on course for the Champions League next season, with 43 points while Parma are 12th with 29.

* Second-placed Napoli wasted half a dozen clearcut chances as they were held 0-0 at Fiorentina in Serie A on Saturday, their fourth successive away game in all competitions without scoring.

* Edinson Cavani is a major doubt for Paris St Germain's Champions League clash with Manchester United after picking up a thigh injury in his team's 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Girondins de Bordeaux on Saturday. The Uruguay striker left the pitch on the stroke of halftime holding his thigh, soon after scoring with a penalty in the 42nd minute.

* Champions Bayern Munich beat Schalke 04 3-1 on Saturday to climb back into second place and cut the gap on Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund to five points. Dortmund are on 50 points after wasting a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Hoffenheim earlier on Saturday.

* The fire that killed 10 young footballers at Flamengo's training ground in Rio de Janeiro was caused by a spike of electricity that led to a fire in an air conditioning unit, the club's CEO Reinaldo Belotti said on Saturday. The fire started in the early hours of Friday morning, a day after a devastating storm struck Rio and killed at least six people.

* Big-hitting Daniil Medvedev stole the show at the Sofia Open on Saturday as he punched his way to an emphatic 6-2 6-4 victory over former world number six Gael Monfils to set up a final clash against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. World number 47 Fucsovics battled past Italian giant-killer Matteo Berrettini 5-7 7-5 6-3 to progress to his second ATP final.

* Wales overpowered Italy 26-15 in the Six Nations on Saturday, notching up a record-equalling 11th straight victory, the first such Welsh winning streak in a century.

* French seventh seed Pierre-Hugues Herbert downed Czech Tomas Berdych 6-2 7-5 to set up an all-French final with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier on Saturday. Wildcard Tsonga beat Moldova’s Radu Albot 6-1 6-3 after overcoming an early break in the second set.
