V.League: Thanh Hoa taste first win, HCM City reclaim top spot

Last season’s runners-up Thanh Hoa FC eventually quenched their thirst for victory in 2019 V.League by defeating former champions Quang Nam FC 3-2 in their matchday 8 encounter at home on May 6.

Inspired by the away draw at Hoang Anh Gia Lai, Thanh Hoa started the clash confidently, producing several threats to the Quang Nam goal in the opening minutes.

Their constant attacks paid off with a 20th-minute opener thanks to Van Hieu’s close-range touch after Trong Hung’s cross from the left wing.

Ha Minh Tuan restored parity for the guests shortly after half-time, as he successfully converted Davis’s left-wing corner kick with an accurate header.

The unexpected goal forced Thanh Hoa FC to strengthen their offence, seeking to resume their advantage and claim their first win of the season.

Van Thang was almost on target for Nguyen Duc Thang’s side in the 67th minute, but his header from five metres was stopped by the Quang Nam keeper.

However, Thanh Hoa only needed to wait eight more minutes before celebrating a second goal, with Rimario slotting the ball in to restore their lead.

Four minutes from over-time, the Jamaican forward took a through ball from Gramoz Kurtaj before feeding it to Van Thang, who made it 3-1 with a comfortable close-range attempt.

With time running out, the visitors managed to pull a goal back, owing to an own goal by Thanh Binh, but could not find a third to escape the overall defeat.

The crucial win helped Thanh Hoa FC jump four places to stand 11th in the table with seven points, two above Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN, who were plunged to bottom position following their 1-2 loss against Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City on the same day.

Despite trailing one goal behind after just two minutes, HCM City demonstrated the power of the title favourites by scoring two consecutive goals, with a powerful long-range strike by Thanh Binh (30’) and an eye-catching volley by Tang Tien (89’).

The impressive 2-1 victory allowed HCM City to resume their reign at the top of the table, one point clear of Hanoi FC.
