Ronaldo penalty earns Juve draw at 10-man Milan

A stoppage-time Cristiano Ronaldo penalty rescued a 1-1 draw for Juventus at 10-man AC Milan on Thursday in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final.

Juventus were awarded a penalty in the dying minutes following a Video Assistant Referee review, which showed that a Ronaldo scissor kick had struck the arm of Milan defender Davide Calabria. The Portuguese forward smashed the spot-kick into the roof of the net to earn his side a draw ahead of the second leg in Turin on March 4.

* Tiger Woods got off to a hot start but cooled off coming home in the opening round of the Genesis Open in Los Angeles on Thursday, carding a two-under-par 69 to sit five strokes behind leader Matt Kuchar. Woods, seeking a record 83rd PGA Tour victory, rolled in a 25-foot eagle putt at the first hole but bogeyed the last at Riviera Country Club.

* Barely a month since he was sacked as Barcelona coach, Ernesto Valverde has begun pondering his next management job, but he fancies going somewhere off the beaten track. Valverde, who won two La Liga titles with Barca, is enjoying a rare break in a career which has lasted 18 years and taken him to some of Spain's top clubs such as Valencia and Athletic Bilbao as well as two stints at Greek giants Olympiakos.

* Carlos Sainz wants to stay at McLaren and is talking already to the former Formula One champions about a contract extension beyond 2020. Speaking to reporters at the launch of the team's new MCL35 car, the 25-year-old Spaniard made clear he had no desire to go elsewhere having joined from Renault at the end of 2018 on a multi-year deal. McLaren are his third team after making a debut with Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso in 2015 alongside Dutch driver Max Verstappen.

* Second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas lost 7-5 6-4 to unseeded Slovenian Aljaz Bedene as upsets continued at the Rotterdam Open on Thursday. Fourth seed David Goffin was eliminated in straight sets by Jannik Sinner, losing 7-6(7) 7-5 to the unseeded Italian.

* Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said his job at the Premier League club may be on the line if they fail to win the Champions League title this season. Former European champions Real Madrid await in the last-16 this season, with the first leg to be played later this month, and Guardiola said he is keen on getting his hands on the trophy he last won with Barcelona in 2011.

* Getafe coach Jose Bordalas has performed miracles with the modest Madrid club by taking them to third in La Liga but a victory away to champions Barcelona on Saturday against old foe Quique Setien would be his biggest feat of all. Bordalas took over Getafe in 2016 when they were second bottom of Spain's second division but guided them to promotion that same campaign before turning them into one of the top teams in the top flight, despite a meagre budget and small fan base.

* Ajax Amsterdam have agreed to sell Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech to Chelsea for an initial 40 million euros in the close season, the Dutch club said on Thursday. Ziyech, who helped Ajax win the league and Dutch Cup double last season, has seen his stock rise further this campaign with eight goals and 18 assists in the league and Champions League. The fee for the 26-year-old could rise to 44 million euros, Ajax added.

* Emily van Egmond scored deep into stoppage time to earn Australia a 1-1 draw with China on Thursday, setting up a playoff against Vietnam next month for a place in the women's football tournament at the Tokyo Olympics. Van Egmond capped a dramatic end to the game in the second minute of added time when she shot past Peng Shimeng after Tang Jiali looked to have earned China a win with her 86th-minute goal.

* Tottenham Hotspur have the opportunity to crank up the pressure on Chelsea in the battle for fourth place in the Premier League this weekend as they emerge from their mini mid-season break. Jose Mourinho's side travel to relegation battlers Aston Villa on Sunday on the back of consecutive league wins, knowing another one will move them one point behind their stuttering London rivals who host Manchester United on Monday.

* UEFA has teamed up with Disney to launch a pan-European project aimed at increasing the number of girls playing football. The biggest-ever attempt to boost girls' involvement in the game will start this spring in seven European countries before being introduced across the continent, European soccer's governing body said on Thursday.

* Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo has yet to set foot in the club's training ground since joining on loan from Shanghai Shenhua after being told to stay away due to concerns over the coronavirus, British media reported on Thursday. The mandated 14-day incubation period will come to an end this weekend and Ighalo is expected to join first-team training ahead of United's Premier League match against Chelsea on Monday.

* Major-winning Swedish golfer Pernilla Lindberg is looking forward to the "incredible challenge" of competing as the lone woman at the New Zealand Open where she will tee off with two-time World Rugby Player of the Year Beauden Barrett. The 33-year-old Lindberg will be the first woman to play in the event, with the 101st edition to be staged at the Millbrook Resort and The Hills in Queenstown from Feb. 27 to March 1.

* Newcastle United have been handed a double injury boost ahead of Sunday's Premier League trip to Arsenal with forwards Joelinton and Yoshinori Muto back in first-team training, the club said on their website. Brazilian Joelinton picked up a rib injury in Newcastle's 3-2 win at Oxford United in the FA Cup fourth round replay last week, while Japan's Muto has not played since early last month because of a hip problem.
