Spurs go top, Chelsea keep pace, United move above City

Tottenham Hotspur moved top of the Premier League after an impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester City while Chelsea beat Newcastle United and Manchester United secured their first home win of the campaign on Saturday (Nov. 21).

Jose Mourinho’s Spurs, unbeaten in their last eight games, have 20 points from nine matches while Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are on 18 points after their 2-0 win at Newcastle. Third-placed Leicester City (18 points) are at fourth-placed Liverpool (17 points) on Sunday and would go back to the top with a win at Anfield.

* Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a groin injury in Saturday's 2-0 win over Manchester City in the Premier League. The Belgian centre half limped off in the 81st minute after going down with the injury and manager Jose Mourinho did not sound optimistic of a quick return.

* Rafa Nadal's dream of adding the ATP Finals title to his vast collection of silverware was ended for another year as the Spaniard was beaten 3-6 7-6(4) 6-3 by Russian Daniil Medvedev in a sizzling semi-final on Saturday. World number four Medvedev's first career victory over the 20-times Grand Slam champion sent him through to a Sunday showdown against Dominic Thiem who earlier beat Novak Djokovic in another titanic clash.

* Atletico Madrid pulled off their first La Liga win over Barcelona in more than a decade as Yannick Carrasco capitalised on a blunder from Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to secure a 1-0 victory at an empty Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday. The win moved Atletico up to second in the standings, level on 20 points with leaders Real Sociedad, while Barca are down in 10th place with 11 points after a third defeat in eight league games under Ronald Koeman.

* A twice-taken penalty from Bruno Fernandes gave an unimpressive Manchester United a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, their first home victory of the Premier League season.

* American Robert Streb extended his lead at the RSM Classic on Saturday with another bogey-free performance, carding a three-under par 67 in the third round. Streb will have to fend off two-time major winner Zach Johnson (65) and his fellow American Bronson Burgoon (67), who were tied for second through 54 holes.

* Cristiano Ronaldo’s first-half double allowed Juventus to climb to second in the Serie A standings with a 2-0 win over Cagliari at Juventus Stadium on Saturday. The win enabled Andrea Pirlo’s unbeaten side to close the gap to leaders AC Milan to one point, with Milan playing at Napoli on Sunday. Cagliari stayed 11th.

* Erling Haaland scored four goals in a sensational second-half performance to help Borussia Dortmund come from a goal down to crush hosts Hertha Berlin 5-2 on Saturday and climb to second place in the Bundesliga. It was an equally memorable match for teenager Youssoufa Moukoko, who replaced Haaland late in the game to become the youngest ever Bundesliga player at the age of 16 years and one day.

* Three Swiss national team skiers have tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Friday's Alpine Ski World Cup parallel giant slalom competition in Lech, Austria, the team said in a statement on Saturday.

* RB Leipzig wasted their chance to join champions Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga after drawing 1-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. The Bavarians had earlier slipped up at home against Werder Bremen by the same score, giving Leipzig a chance to join them on 19 points with a win.

* Real Madrid conceded a fourth penalty in two games as they drew 1-1 at Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday, dropping points for the second game in a row. The champions went ahead in the second minute with a diving header from Mariano Diaz. Villarreal were much improved in the second half and after spurning numerous chances striker Gerard Moreno beat Thibaut Courtois from the spot in the 76th minute after the Belgian keeper had felled substitute Samuel Chukwueze.

* Brighton & Hove Albion celebrated their first Premier League victory since September after Danny Welbeck helped them to a 2-1 win at Aston Villa on Saturday with his first goal for the club. Solly March also netted a fine goal for the visitors to cancel out Ezri Konsa's equaliser as Brighton moved clear of the relegation zone with nine points from as many games.

* Ciro Immobile became Lazio's joint second top goalscorer in Serie A history as he set his side on their way to a 2-0 victory at Crotone in sodden conditions on Saturday. The match was in danger of being called off after violent storms and flooding in Calabria, but after the pitch passed an inspection, Immobile glanced home a 21st minute header to move onto 107 Serie A goals for Lazio, alongside Giuseppe Signori.

* KTM Tech 3 rider and home hope Miguel Oliveira edged out Franco Morbidelli to take pole position for the MotoGP season-ending Portuguese Grand Prix at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimao on Saturday. Portugal's Oliveira scorched MotoGP's reserve track, which is hosting the country's first race in the championship since 2012, to produce an all-time circuit lap record of one minute 38.892 seconds, 0.044 clear of Petronas Yamaha's Morbidelli.

* Beijing Guoan moved to the top of Group E of the Asian Champions League on Saturday with a 2-1 win over FC Seoul in Doha as the Chinese Super League side impressed upon their return to the rescheduled continental club championship. Goals from Brazil-born duo Fernando and Alan Carvalho gave Bruno Genesio’s side a win that keeps Beijing three points clear of the Koreans and Melbourne Victory.

* Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has won the 2020 Golden Boy award after an impressive start at the Bundesliga club, Italian newspaper Tuttosport announced on Saturday. Haaland beat Barcelona teenager Ansu Fati and Bayern Munich winger Alphonso Davies to the award, which is given to the best under-21 player from one of the top-flight European leagues.

* Petronas Yamaha's MotoGP rider Franco Morbidelli will participate in the World Rally Championship (WRC) for the first time in his career at Rally Monza with Hyundai Rally Team Italia, WRC said on Saturday. The final race of the rallying season is being held from Dec. 3-6 and the 25-year-old will be competing in the WRC3 class in a Hyundai i20 R5.

* Paris St Germain forward Neymar will start Tuesday's crucial Champions League game against RB Leipzig after making his comeback from injury, coach Thomas Tuchel said. Neymar returned from a three-week hamstring injury layoff when he played half an hour in Friday's 3-2 defeat at Monaco in Ligue 1 as Tuchel sought to give him a bit of match rhythm before the Group H clash at the Parc des Princes.

* The start of the Australian Open is set to be pushed back from January to February or March next year due to COVID-19 protocols in the country, the Herald Sun newspaper reported on Saturday.
