Despite taking a comfortable 21-16 lead in the first set, third seeded Tien Minh faced off a tough challenge from No. 11 seed Tan Chung Seang and lost 12-21 in the second set.
The match was then decided by the third set, in which world no. 9 Tien Minh decisively won 21/8 to move on to the quarterfinal round where he matches up against world no. 65 Sattawat Pongnairat from America.
Minh got off to a flying start at this year’s tournament with a handy opening 2-0 victory (21/8, 21/10) over unknown Mexican rival Lopez Andres on Tuesday before conquering his second game against American Calvin Lin in two straight sets of 21/6 the following day.
