Viet Nam’s Engineering Unit Rotation 3 supports education and community development in Abyei

Despite the harsh weather conditions at the end of the dry season, Viet Nam’s Engineering Unit Rotation 3 at the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) continues to work tirelessly to fulfil its core political tasks.

These include major projects such as upgrading roads and airports, building a smart camp, and preparing for Contingent-Owned Equipment (COE) inspections and mission readiness evaluations. During their off-duty hours, the team also actively engages in civil-military cooperation activities.

As part of these civil-military cooperation (CIMIC) efforts, on May 13, Viet Nam’s Engineering Unit Rotation 3 donated and provided technical support for a set of modern office equipment to the Abyei Regional Department of Education. The donation is intended to support teaching, meetings, and administrative operations, and includes one laptop, one Canon 2900 printer, one projector, and five reams of A4 paper.

In addition, demonstrating creativity and resourcefulness, the officers and personnel of Viet Nam’s Engineering Unit Rotation 3 made use of their free time to craft 15 sets of student desks and benches for Abyei Town Primary School.

These practical desk-bench sets not only serve immediate educational needs but also symbolise the warmth and solidarity of Vietnamese “blue beret” peacekeepers with the local youth.

Deeply moved by the practical and heartfelt contributions of the Vietnamese team, Biong Mathok Aguek, Minister of Education of Abyei, expressed his gratitude:

“I am very happy to receive the office equipment and school furniture donated by the Vietnamese Engineering Unit. I truly appreciate the care and support the Vietnamese friends have extended to the education sector here in Abyei. Thank you so much.”

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Hong Giang, Head of Construction Team 2, under the Engineering Unit Rotation 3, shared:

“In line with the team’s civil affairs plan, our personnel gathered and reused materials from dismantled old accommodation modules and shipment packaging from Viet Nam to design and build sturdy desk-bench sets. These efforts aim to help schools in Abyei improve their facilities, enhance teaching conditions, and contribute to raising local living standards and education levels.”

These practical and humanitarian initiatives by Vietnamese peacekeepers have not only improved the living and learning conditions of the people in Abyei but also strengthened the trust and affection of the local authorities and community for the Vietnamese “peace envoys.” At the same time, they affirm Viet Nam’s strong commitment to fulfilling its noble international obligations in the name of global peace and development.
