Vietnam hopes for more effective cooperation with Italy

NDO/VNA—Vietnam expects that its friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Italy will develop more practically and effectively in the interests of both nations, President Tran Dai Quang has said.

At a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Rome on November 23, President Quang stressed that Vietnam highly values Italy’s position in its region and the world at large.

For his part, PM Renzi said Italy also appreciates Vietnam’s role and position in its region and the global arena.

Host and guest highlighted the great efforts made by Vietnamese and Italian ministries and agencies to realise cooperation agreements and projects, helping to develop the bilateral relationship in a more comprehensive and sustainable way.

They agreed to step up exchanges of high-ranking delegations and meetings between Vietnamese and Italian ministries, agencies and local governments while effectively deploying mechanisms for dialogue and cooperation on politics, the economy, defence and science and technology, along with action plans for collaboration on culture, education and training.

The leaders agreed to raise two-way trade to US$6 billion in the next two years and to create optimal conditions in which for Italian businesses to invest in the fields of mechanical manufacturing, new materials, nano and bio-technologies, energy, food and timber processing, garments and textiles and leather footwear.

They held that the Vietnam-Italy Business Forum, which was held the same day, will contribute to boosting economic, trade and investment links between the two countries.

The leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern and agreed to continue their coordination and reciprocal support at multilateral institutions such as the UN, ASEAN, the EU, the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and UNESCO.

Italy backs Vietnam’s efforts to strengthen its all-round cooperation with the EU. In turn, Vietnam stands ready to act as a bridge connecting Italy with other ASEAN nations as well as the Asia-Pacific region at large.

The leaders emphasised the need to address disputes in the East Sea by peaceful means on the basis of respecting international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, to fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, to finalise a Code of Conduct in the East Sea soon and to ensure freedom of navigation and aviation in the sea.

At the end of their meeting, the two leaders witnessed the exchange of cooperation documents signed during President Quang’s visit to Italy.
Earlier, Italian President Sergio Mattarella and his daughter hosted a ceremony to see President Tran Dai Quang and his spouse of as they left Rome for Milan and the Lombardia region of northern Italy.
